Edwin Black: Infamous Auschwitz Tattoo Began as an IBM Number

[Edwin Black is the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of IBM and the Holocaust, and the forthcoming book, The Plan--How to Save America the Day after the Oil Stops— or Perhaps the Day Before (Dialog Press, September 2008). This essay was adapted from a 2001 article which originally appeared in the Village Voice and syndicated thereafter, which received the award for Best Investigative Article of the Year by American Society of Journalists and Authors.] In August 1943, a t

Ok, fellow hackers, I propose a pact: That new EU age verification app thingy ... do NOT help improve it.

Don't publish findings. Don't responsibly disclose insecurities. Don't facilitate them making it bulletproof.

If personal data is directly at risk, by all means, slam their asses into the ground. GDPR them into oblivion.

But on its core functionality this needs to be, to become, and to stay, the most insecure, the most easily circumventable piece of shit code on the planet.

as a computer toucher your primary moral responsibility is to Not Be Part Of IBM In The Early 20th Century No Matter What Your Fuckin Excuse
@MrBerard without solidarity, I can guarantee that your experience on an illegal distro developed under the radar will be extremely bad, though that’s a bit immaterial to be honest, as the point of this law isn’t to protect anyone but rather to provide an excuse for a fascist system to hurt you. thus, “can’t I just run a web browser on my thermostat”, yes and they’ll send men to your door the moment you do anything worthwhile with it

@MrBerard the age verification code is already in systemd, a core component of most distros that owns the majority of the trusted boot chain and is designed to be very hard to fork, which tends to break other applications if you don’t keep up on updates

the current age verification code is designed to comply in advance with a California law, but age verification is under consideration for US and EU law almost in lockstep

If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature:

- HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air
- at least two child psychologists on staff
- age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse
- funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse
- arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids
- massive, safe playgrounds
- protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoods

Instead we get “parents’ rights”, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers.

If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.
