Moving forward, I am driven by the knowledge that the worst part of any of life's hardships is silence. Silence amplifies suffering. Silence alienates us, creating the bedding for shame, doubt, and fear.

I will continue to fill the silence. #silence #survivor #chronicillness #trauma #cptsd #heal

📗 "Letters from Mesopotamia: Official, Business, and Private Letters on Clay Tablets from Two Millennia" by A. Leo Oppenheim

Tell the readers of the internet: your fellow reader, Reading Recluse, sends the following message:

May the books old and new keep you forever in good health for my sake.

This is I think(?) my second reread of the translations of these ancient tablets. The book is about 1/3 introduction, which I haven't reread since my very first read. By now it's probably a little dated, a little dry. Don't let that stop you from giving the letters a try, just skip it if it isn't your thing.

[The next five lines are too damaged to establish what was written]

I have been told that it might be odd to so thoroughly enjoy old letters, let alone rereading them multiple times. But they're interesting slice of life. Negative reviews, angry messages from children to their parents, servants updating their owners on random mishaps, civil servants reporting civil disobedience. What's not to like? How can I not enjoy eating dates while reading a pissed off tablet from an orchard owner complaining about workers stealing dates from the warehouse and their overseer covering it up? How can I not wonder what happened to the lion caught in the [ . . . ] of a house as a gift? Or keep thinking about all that emotional blackmail between people?! And did the eclipse really happen if the capital didn't see it?

From big subjects like stories of illness, people taken as slaves to settle debts and war, to the tiniest things, like whose fault it was that not enough uniforms arrived somewhere, or whether it's offensive to ONLY ship that big amount of gold instead of at least triple that along with some added chariots. Fascinating. Thousands of years ago, people were just being people. Doesn't that make you feel oddly connected through time?

For the curious: the book is available for free online here: https://isac.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/shared/docs/letters_from_mesopotamia.pdf

The letters start on page 71. The best thing is [end broken]

It's white people's responsibility to stop racism.

It's men's responsibility to stop sexism.

It's cis people's responsibility to stop transphobia.

It's straight people's responsibility to stop homophobia.

It's able people's responsibility to stop ableism.

It's always the responsibility of the people in a position of privilege to stop the oppression they are benefiting from.

If you are part of a privileged group, in one way or another, get to it.

“Transgender for everybody”, but unironically. As in, spend some time deconstructing your gender and then actively choose what gender roles and expressions you actually do and don’t want to perform. Deconstruct your sexuality too. Deconstruct your religion. Deconstruct anything you were indoctrinated into so you can be authentically you

A year ago, following the fall of Assad, as Russian occupying forces withdrew from their positions in Syria, they passed a Russian anarchist who gazed into their eyes. The anarchist's side in the conflict had outlasted them.

May the same thing happen in Russia one day.
