This week, I teach the students of WBIO-A-08 how to use the CLI. Currently they are having a lot of fun with piping 😈
They already learned how to create a @deNBI VM, transfer files, install tools via apt, and how to use a lot of small helpful utilities. In the next days some more bioinformatics orientated tools will follow.

This Utricularia gibba was gifted as a piece of art to a gardener from the Botanic Gardens Bonn for helping with growing plants that I use for research. Another specimen is hold by the Herbarium Bonn. For the Botanic Gardens Bonn, Utricularia gibba is usually a "weed" that needs to be removed regularly. Last year, some were allowed to bloom to obtain seeds. #Utricularia #Herbarium #BotanicalGarden #Bonn

Happy new year! Just repotted my Nicotiana benthamiana plants that I will use for #research next year! They are my most favorite root-harboring model organism 😁
What is your most favorite model organism?

This week I visited @fzj to learn about their exascale supercomputer and microscale bioengineering. I was impressed by the potential of these technologies to drive innovation in various fields.

I am also grateful for the chance to explore career paths beyond traditional research roles. The opportunity to see the diverse range of options available has been really helpful for me to think about my own future.

This week I visited my first conference, which was very interesting and provided me with a lot of new input! I am really thankful to the organizers and all participants of the Early Career Workshop of the DBG sections “Natural Products” and “Applied Botany” 😊

I spotted some Utricularia neglecta in the BGs Bonn. At least, I am pretty sure it is not U. australis ;)

What do you think the exact species of this plant is?

For classification, I used this nice website (only in German): https://www.blumeninschwaben.de/Zweikeimblaettrige/xKleineFamilien/wasserschlauch.htm

Additionally, this work is important to consider regarding not being U. australis: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ppees.2021.125649

One more reason to avoid Elsevier. I wanted to show a picture from a scientific article in my progress report. This should cost 1,591.01 EUR. Such high prices are hindering science.

I recently took a few pictures of my in vitro cultures. Probably the red color is due to stress (e.g. nutrition deficiency).
