Last #UtriculariaTuesday, I shared pics of Utricularia livida ‘Merrie Heart,’ a cultivar from Mexico. Here is another clone of U. livida (most likely from Central or Southern Africa). This species occurs across a wide geographic range, including tropical and Southern Africa, Madagascar, Mexico, and other Latin American countries. Oddly enough, two other bladderwort species, U. pubescens and U. simulans, occupy similar distributions.

Anyone else growing bladderworts? For this #UtriculariaTuesday, meet Utricularia ‘Merrie Heart,’ a cultivar of U. livida from Mexico. This plant spreads vigorously, escaping through the drainage holes at the bottom of its pot. The flowers on each spike last for several weeks, and it blooms almost constantly if it receives enough light. I’ll share pics of my other U. livida specimen next Tuesday.

This Utricularia gibba was gifted as a piece of art to a gardener from the Botanic Gardens Bonn for helping with growing plants that I use for research. Another specimen is hold by the Herbarium Bonn. For the Botanic Gardens Bonn, Utricularia gibba is usually a "weed" that needs to be removed regularly. Last year, some were allowed to bloom to obtain seeds. #Utricularia #Herbarium #BotanicalGarden #Bonn

The natural distribution of #Utricularia livida is a bit perplexing. It includes tropical and Southern Africa, Madagascar, and Mexico. In Peter Taylor’s monograph, he states, “This distribution is, of course, of very great interest and I have failed to discover any other plant species with a similar range” (Taylor, 1989).

I spotted some Utricularia neglecta in the BGs Bonn. At least, I am pretty sure it is not U. australis ;)

What do you think the exact species of this plant is?

For classification, I used this nice website (only in German): https://www.blumeninschwaben.de/Zweikeimblaettrige/xKleineFamilien/wasserschlauch.htm

Additionally, this work is important to consider regarding not being U. australis: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ppees.2021.125649

A special gift from a dear friend: Utricularia calycifida 'Gran Sabana'.
Its deep green leaves with bold purple veins are already a showstopper—and now it's growing a flower stalk too! Can’t wait to see it bloom.

At a glance this might not look particularly unusual, but this is also a carnivorous plant! Utricularia alpina ‘Pittier Moon’ is a cultivar originating from Venezuela, but the species can be found in much of northern South America and even across higher mountains of the Caribbean. They grow in moss pads on the trunks and branches of trees, and produce huge, orchid-like white and yellow flowers well over 2 inches across.
I’m selling divisions of this one presently also: https://www.carltoncarnivores.com/product-page/utricularia-alpina-pittier-moon

Utricularia alpina 'Pittier Moon' | Carlton Carnivores

Named for the national park from which this form originates, one of the easiest of the Orchidioides bladderworts develops thick stolons and clear storage tubers within epiphytic moss setups, sending up broad spade-shaped leaves and, given appropriate seasons, large stalks bearing one to several even larger blooms, well over 2 inches across with bright white petals and a yellow central palate.Available plants will be single-growth point divisions.
