Jean-Paul Sartre (June 21, 1905 - April 15, 1980) as a child, lost the use of one eye, but later became one of the sharpest observers of human nature.

#Sartre believed that people are not born with a fixed “essence”: we become ourselves through choices.

By the end of his life he was almost blind, but he kept working. Around 50,000 people reportedly came to his funeral procession in Paris.

Harriet Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 — July 1, 1896) was a preacher’s daughter, a teacher, a wife, and a mother of seven.

In 1852, her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin became a sensation: about 10,000 copies were sold in the first week, and 300,000 before the end of the year.

Thirteen years later, #slavery was abolished in the US. One book did not end slavery by itself but #Stowe showed millions of readers the human pain behind it.

Anne Frank (June 12, 1929 – February 1945) for her thirteenth birthday received a diary. She began to write about her life, the people around her, short stories — even a novel.

She dreamed of becoming a writer.

War left us only her diary.

It stole the girl, the books she never wrote, and the life she should have had.
