For fun I wanted to try coming up with my idea for a postmarketOS mascot.
(this is totally unofficial btw! I hope folks from @postmarketOS dont mind.)

I made the initial sketch in Krita, but then decided to finally give Inkscape a try, took me whole weekend but it's here!

Robot bnuuy.

Also shout out to @RannyBergamotte who came up with the cute little stick arm version of pmOS logo, I had to include it! 💚

Today I reached a pretty cool milestone in my work to build an immutable #postmarketOS: the first configurable bootup with an encrypted user data partition and read-only /usr (for A/B updates)

Still lots more work to do though, but please enjoy this janky recording of me trying it out in a VM 🥳

Thanks to @nlnet for sponsoring this work :D

I got my Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x running PostmarketOS :D
thanks to casey, achill, valpackett and people in #aarch64-laptops and #postmarketOS on oftc for the help figuring out some of the quirks 💚♻️

In case you missed the last #GNOME foundation update: we're excited to share that we have officially joined the @gnome advisory board! We hope this will help us bring more attention to the #LinuxMobile effort and let us make GNOME on postmarketOS even better across all form factors.

Gah. Every week I'm like "I'll do a short one this week" and then I... do not.   ## New Treasurers We recently announced our new treasurer, Deepa Venkatraman. We will also have a new vice-treasurer joining us in October. This is really exciting. It's important that Deepa and I can see with absolute clarity...

This feels super awkward to ask, but I'm trying to crowdfund a used M2 MacBook for #postmarketOS development. My current ARM laptop can't safely run VMs (have to choose between virtualization or battery monitoring 😅). Daily-driving new hardware has helped me improve other ports (e.g. ThinkPad X13s), so this would help me work more efficiently and advance the M-series port in pmOS!

Last month, I spent about a week working on Plasma Bigscreen, hoping to get it back in Plasma releases again!

Read about it on my blog: https://espi.dev/posts/2025/07/plasma-bigscreen/

#kde

@espidev wow this looks GREAT! I assume one could control it with a mouse cursor using KDE Connect?
@justin Yes, there already is a Bigscreen remote plugin built into KDE Connect!
@espidev its like if android TV wasnt a hellscape of "watch this now" bs and adverts
@espidev very cool! Would love to retire steam big picture mode from the living room TV which already runs on Plasma KDE!

@wraptile @espidev wait can steam big picture do media content from streaming services?

I might try this out

@sounddrill yes! You can add a browser or an electron app as a non-steam game and use controller as a mouse. It works quite well
@espidev can't wait to use it on my TV. :-)
@espidev looks really nice! I once played around with bigscreen when my dad got a new TV because I despise its UI. so bloated and laggy - plasma would be a breath of fresh air there, but back then it was... very not ready. thanks for the work!
@espidev nice looking TV home screen, good job! How can I try it? I would like to use it on my TV ideally with Raspberry PI. Thanks!

@jan It's not yet released as part of Plasma so it won't be packaged on distributions just yet. However, you can either build it manually, or install postmarketOS and set it up with their nightly repo: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Nightly

(and install the plasma-bigscreen package)

@espidev holy shit yes, finally - android tv without the android :D
@espidev such a great project! Glad some people are giving it time and love
@espidev ah yes, Konsole, my favourite TV channel.
@espidev super amazing work! Best design I’ve seen on KDE just yet 🥹 keep it up!
@irfan @espidev If it was grey'ish it could almost belong to Gnome, which I mean in the best possible way (it's a really clean design ).

@espidev I love it so much. Can we run it on a Fire TV stick? If so, its adoption could drive more users (even nerdy users count as users for now) and with users, we get user feedback.

I really hope this project doesn’t become abandonware.

@shanmukhateja Thank you!

I think the question is more if we can get a distribution running on Fire TV sticks, which doesn't seem to be the case just yet: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices

However, any sort of computer that can run a modern Linux distribution and can connect to a TV is fair game!

@espidev this is so awesome! I'd love to put this on an HTPC some day :)
@espidev awesome! so happy this project has been resurrected
@espidev I am waiting a stable release for 2 years ! Thanks.
@espidev
Oh, so it's your fault if my husband's going to get mad at me for adding yet another hacky device in our home!
😁
@espidev WOW, great work. Thanks.
@espidev This looks really great, thank you for all the work you put into it!

@espidev oh, sweet! This would be great for HTPC! Or some mobile view (a tablet maybe?)

Is there an option to see/ kill recent programs on the horizon? 😁

@espidev I love to see such accessibility improvements. Dpad/ arrow key nav is always awesome

@pak0st There is a "task manager" view to show running applications that is accessible from an indicator when apps are running!

The UI still needs some work though, and in theory, most users will probably also use only one app at a time.

@espidev looks really nice. Good job.
@espidev I noticed things happening there. Great work!
I was hoping to use Plasma Bigscreen as a UI for a movie and emulation system for my living room. Good to see it getting enough maintenance again.
@espidev oooh that's a nice TV UI
@espidev @postmarketOS Ain’t no way, it’s actually not ugly anymore
@espidev Nice work! I hope the project gets some traction, this space could definitely use some more options!
@espidev Damn, Looks insane !
@espidev I love the idea of bigscreen for years but it needs a ton of work and Kirigami apps have to be more easily adaptable to big screens and remotes. I am extremely glad it's no longer half dead and very thankful for your work tho! :)
@espidev You obviously don't have to try it but just out of curiosity and in case you find time to test or already did. How well does SmartTube Next work through Waydroid and can the StremIO desktop interface be controlled over a remote or can we run the TV one through Waydroid too? These are my two main TV apps next to Kodi which certainly works and if they are covered I could theoretically get a minicomputer instead of a new TV stick and use PostmarketOS on it.
@espidev oh this looks sick! honestly i bet this'd be real nice to have on the steam deck, for more general-use applications than just gaming :p

i already use my steam deck a bit for multimedia purposes, so this'd be a nice way to navigate things
@espidev Former plasma bigscreen user here, this is amazing! Thanks for your work on this!
@espidev Looks amazing! I hope we will eventually have a vendor which allows installing a custom rom on its tv's
@espidev
You barely recognise the old ugly version in this new this one! Great work!
@espidev
Why not pinning this to your profile?
:)
@espidev This is insanely good. I'm really looking forward to giving it a try.
