There's probably something I'm missing, but as I understand it, in theory, it's possible to make a magnet that attracts gold, and any other sufficiently conductive material. But the cartoon #physics might not be entirely nonsense! xD

“I’m very thankful that I get to blow stuff up with giant lasers for discoveries. And that’s my job, you know.”

Physicists Blow Up Gold With Giant Lasers, Accidentally Disprove Renowned Physics Model

For the first time, physicists have directly measured the temperature of extremely hot gold particles using a giant X-ray laser—a breakthrough with major implications for engineering spacecraft or nuclear fusion reactors.

🚀 Milestone in #antimatter research! For the first time, researchers from the #BASEcollaboration #CERN, HHU Düsseldorf and GSI/FAIR have made an antiproton oscillate back and forth between two spin states for almost a minute - and thus realized the world's first antimatter qubit!

The study has now been published in Nature Magazine.

Publication in the scientific journal “Nature”: Milestone in antimatter research

The BASE collaboration at the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN in Geneva has achieved a breakthrough in antimatter research: For the first time, the researchers were able to let a single antiproton – the antimatter counterpart of a proton – oscillate between two spin quantum states in a controlled manner for almost a minute. The collaboration includes scientists from numerous international institutions, including researchers from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) and GSI/FAIR...

Starting to hate summer vacation. My 10yo just exploded a water balloon on his bed. It's like he threw his mattress in the shower. At least it was clean water.

Hey #believeInFilm friends,

One more for today.

I wrote an article about halations in film photography, their fascinating physical properties, how and why they are countered by anti-halation coatings, and their creative value today:

It appears that most of the internet may be wrong about what forms halations. 🤷

The incredible physics of quantum levitation Quantum levitation isn't just a cool phenomenon, it's only possible when things are so cold that your material superconducts in a special (type II) way. Here's how to do it yourself. bigthink.com/starts-with-... #physics #science #materials

With the right material at the right temperature and a magnetic track, physics really does allow perpetual motion without energy loss.

A Variety of Vortices

Winds parted around the Kuril Islands and left behind a string of vortices in this satellite image from April 2025. This pattern of alternating vortices is known as a von Karman vortex street. The varying directions of the vortex streets show that winds across the islands ranged from southeasterly to southerly. Notice also that the size of the island dictates the size of the vortices. Larger islands create larger vortices, and smaller islands have smaller and more frequent vortices. (Image credit: M. Garrison; via NASA Earth Observatory)
