My ex-colleague @pcastromartin has published this blog post about the chart topping Open Access performance of Scotland's universities. Worth a read!

Strong performance of Scottish HEIs in 2023 CWTS Leiden Open Ranking

The Open Access section of the CWTS Leiden ‘open ranking’ for 2023 published on Jan 30th, 2024 shows the usual strong performance of Scottish universities, with 5 of them in the top-11. This Open R…

Authors explore how common data repository shutdowns are and suggest what can be done to ensure data preservation in the long-term. https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2024/01/31/do-disappearing-data-repositories-pose-a-threat-to-open-science-and-the-scholarly-record/
Do disappearing data repositories pose a threat to open science and the scholarly record?

Research data repositories play a vital role in ensuring research is reproducible, replicable and reusable. Yet, the infrastructure supporting them can be impermanent. Drawing on a new dataset Doro…

"We found that [data] repository shutdown was not rare: 6.2% of all repositories listed in re3data were shut down..."

....which is why #repositories -- any #repository -- should not be established by an organization unless there is institutional acceptance that its establishment is forever, essentially. It is commitment to the scholarly record. I dread to think what data suggest about publication repositories. 🫣

In the light of recent publications, it doesn't hurt to go over a few simple calculations yet again:

"even when considering all services we don’t currently pay for, the true cost per paper would not exceed $100"

https://blog.joss.theoj.org/2019/06/cost-models-for-running-an-online-open-journal

This fits very well with what we have calculated:

https://f1000research.com/articles/10-20/v2
and of course many others as well (references in our paper). Remember, if someone tells you academic publishing costs more, they're not doing it right

Trying out the #openscience group @open_science and seeing if we can get a significant share of the open science community to participate.

CNRS has unsubscribed from Scopus publications database https://www.cnrs.fr/en/cnrsinfo/cnrs-has-unsubscribed-scopus-publications-database

"Unsubscribing from #Scopus bibliographic database is first stage of process of freeing #CNRS from commercial databases and gradually switching to free bibliographic tools"

"#WOS subscription will be maintained during this transition"

"CNRS's decision is in line with international vision underpinning announcement by @cwts that it is launching transparent reproducible version of its world ranking of universities"

The CNRS has unsubscribed from the Scopus publications database

The CNRS committed to open science several years ago and of course this includes publication databases for which sustainable open solutions need to be found.

Interesting to see #rightsretention clauses gradually finding their way into so-called #TAs aka #RnPdeals (as predicted in @pacobib's paper at https://mastodon.cloud/@pacobib/111504716930997325)
