Finally got round to downloading Metatext so I can really give this Fediverse thing a go!
Most of my followers here know me from Twitter but just in case you don’t…hi 👋 I’m a Classicist who loves interacting about all things ancient world, academia, politics, running, donuts, and Schitt’s Creek (not necessarily in that order).
UPDATE for all #AncMed fans & tooters: I have officially petitioned for a Latin translation of the #Mastodon UI and am waiting for an answer right now. If anyone of you wants to help out in the process, make sure to follow my #LatinToots , or join the CrowdIn translation tool as soon as the work begins. New hashtag concerning this project: #LatinUI

A favourite moment from Thucydides - a curious detail that seems like he's channeling his inner Herodotus:

In Athens "the elder men of the rich families who had these luxurious tastes only recently gave up wearing linen undergarments and tying their hair behind their heads in a knot fastened with a clasp of golden grasshoppers". (1.6)

Beautiful quote from Cicero:

sōlis candor inlūstrior est quam ūllīus ignis, quippe quī inmēnsō mundō tam longē lātēque conlūceat.

The brightness of the sun is more brilliant than that of any fire, inasmuch as it shines so far and wide in an immeasurable universe.

Cicero, De Natura Deorum 2.40.3

Quote and translation in Jones and Sidwell, Reading Latin: Grammar and Exercises, 2nd edn., p.145.

Suetonius has entered the group chat. 🔥

Hello beautiful folk of Mastodon! The Partial Historians is a podcast focused on ancient Roman history. We also dip into areas across the wider Mediterranean as well. Dr Rad is a specialist in Spartacus and Dr G is an expert on the Vestal Virgins.

Our primary series is tracing the history of Rome from the founding of the city - we’re up to the 430s BCE (only taken us 10 years to get here!).

We also interview amazing scholars about their work. The latest is the fabalous @vickyausten @mstdn.ca on depictions of flora in the Augustan age.

Our aim is to bring you history with rigour and depth while also ensuring it is accessible. Watch this space!

TLDR: How can I retain my Latin? :)

I'm looking for any advice on retaining ancient languages when you have to focus your studies on a different area for a time.

I am taking ancient Greek next year after spending two years studying Latin. But I am keen to retain my current level of Latin - to the extent possible without the daily intensity of the last two years. With Greek to learn, a day job in a different area and family commitments, I know this will be a challenge.

I'd be grateful for any advice on what strategies you have found useful for retaining (even improving?) language fluency, especially in ancient languages.

I have some general thoughts at this stage (LLPSI, periodically translating passages as we did in class, reading parallel texts, etc.).

However I'm interested in any more specific strategies that have worked for the Mastodon history community.

I reluctantly do this #introduction thing but here we go.

I study the #roman #empire from the bottom up, exploring how Roman Imperial hegemony changed everyday practices in cities throughout the Roman Mediterranean. I have done a lot of work in #pompeii, #ostia and #paestum. I look forward to work on understanding Rome in its contemporary Afro-Eurasian context, broadening what #ancienthistory is.

I am also programme chair of #urbanstudies at Leiden University in The Hague.

Can we get a hashtag like #FannyFriday started in the #Fediverse, #histodons & @antiquidons? 🤔

#Friday was the #DayofAphrodite for the ancient Greeks, preserved as the Day of Venus in many Romance languages & as Frigg's Day in English. Therefore, it's fitting for a day that celebrates the #vulva and female sexuality 👌

Toot vulva #artefacts and #art, share vulva #funfacts, and tell us about vulva #history!

I found this handsome cat trinket on the side of the road when I went out walking on the weekend. That means something auspicious for my #Latin exam next week, doesn't it?
