Vio, die Hauptfigur, macht sich schwere Vorwürfe nach einem Unfall ihres Kindes. Sie fürchtet eine sichtbare Narbe und quält sich mit dem Gefühl, als Mutter versagt zu haben.

Doch das ist nur einer von vier Erzählsträngen. Die Autorin spannt den Bogen zurück zu Vios Ahnin Theresia und zur Geschichte der Donauschwaben, die das Banat urbar machten. Sogar die Banater Erde bekommt eine Stimme, wie eine Mutter, die ihren flügge gewordenen Kindern ins Gewissen redet.

Es wird nach und nach klar, dass es nicht darum geht, ob Vios Tochter schön sein wird. Es geht darum, ob sie ihren eigenen Weg gehen darf, ohne sich kleinzumachen oder zu sehr anzupassen. Die zentrale Frage ist: Wird mein Kind sein schönstes aller Leben leben können?

Betty Boras ist ein Debüt gelungen, dass es geschafft hat, Themen zu einem stimmigen Roman zu verknüpfen, die alle alleine schon ein eigenes Buch füllen könnten: Herkunft, Mutterschaft, Schönheitsidealen, dem Umgang mit Schuldgefühlen und dem Ankommen in sich selbst.

Erschienen ist es bei hanserblau, mit 240 Seiten ein kompakter Roman mit viel Tiefe.
