Another art installation in the Roman baths of Diocletian breaks the magnificence of the spaces and ruins the effect the ancient halls. Surely it is possible to have an art exhibition that respects rather than lessens the archaeological site that people have come to see. #rome #archaeology #ancienthistory #romanhistory #ancientrome

Are these gaming pieces or locker room tokens at the Roman baths?

The term "spintria" to describe these erotic, coin-like tokens is a modern term from scholarship. We don't know what the Romans called them. In #ancientRome, a spintria was a male prostitute.

✨Augustus and Tiberius - the Gemma Augustea✨

One of the most impressive artefacts from the Julio-Claudian period, the Gemma Augustea is our pick this #ReliefWednesday. Augustus is honoured in the top register in the guise of Jupiter, holding a sceptre and an augur’s staff. Tiberius is on the left about to disembark from a chariot. Germanicus also makes an appearance dressed in military attire. The lower register depicts a military victory, thought to be the suppression of the Dalmatian Revolt.
