TIL that quite an institution in publishing classical, philosophical & historical books in Germany, the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft (WBG), already closed up shop in 2023 due to financial problems. Some of its titles, brands & assets have since been taken over by the Herder publishing house, but those are hard to find/browse on their website. I guess this development is not really surprising overall, but it still feels like a loss - especially for the #AncMed community here. 😔

#Osiris proves that you can have an erection long after you're dead and, with a little magic, even father a son posthumously.

Picking up the thread from yesterday. To recap, today is the 29th and last day of Boēdromiōn. Since the ten days of an Athenian month are counted *down* rather than *up*, when you only have 29 days you have to skip a day you would have in a 30-day month 🧵

I promised I would come back to the controversy of the the "omitted day" in the ancient Athenian calendar and today is the day. 🧵

This year Boēdromiṓn is a "hollow" month, the first one of the year, meaning that it has 29 days rather than 30. It's worth talking a bit about how the choice of "hollow" vs. "full" is maybe the most made-up part of the made-up calendar generated for my bot

In Delphi, today is Boukátios 15, (probably the last day of) the Pythian Games. Two years to go until the Olympic Games in Elis #AncMed #GreekHistory

I made a very niche bot to toot today's date on the Athenian calendar @hemerologion

Happy Skirophoriṓn 17, it's almost the end of 2022/2023!

It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏

A little late because my pc wouldn't boot this morning: #Hermes putting on his sandals, a #neoclassical work by François Rude.

Okay, I am more and more interested in #AncMed #BlueHumanities. This field just combines all of my interests. So, where to start? I already have two introductions about Greco-Roman piracy and one intro to Roman shipbuilding, but there has to be more, right? Where is all the good stuff? Any entry points you'd recommend? Boosts appreciated ...
