Opinion: music has been de-monetized.

Streaming royalties are tiny fractions of a penny. Tangible product sales have waned due to downloading. The only way for artists to make substantial earnings is by touring. Music use to be rewarded with sizeable contracts for those talented and lucky enough to please the public ear. Now, very few are making serious money. There is no secure path to simply make a living song writing if you choose this career.
