Hi! I'm an oldish cis het software developer, married to Helen. I've recently discovered that I'm #ActuallyAutistic.

If you have something in your profile, I'll generally accept your follow request. I don't always follow back; you needn't follow back if you don't want to.

Avatar is a genuine photo of a Jersey street sign, which says "Hill Street" in English and "Three Pigeons Road" in French, signifying absurdity.

The Diagnosis

@bobjmsn @NinjaWerewolf @KatyElphinstone

I don’t like the term “diagnosis”.

I think that autistics, whether identified or not, often have higher levels of anxiety for several reasons.

- much more acute senses, that would be helpful for survival in the wild, easily get overwhelmed by human-made environments. Noise, flashing lights etc. can happen any moment. There’s a constant tension in the background.

- once we’ve been bullied or attacked a few times, which for some of us happens as soon as we start school, it keeps us on high alert around potentially dangerous people. And for some of us, having a “diagnosis” even made us stand out more. Some decades ago, it was a lot more stigmatising than it is today.

- you’re right about the privileged group having no idea about the stress level of the non-privileged. That’s true for all such hierarchies. BIPOC around white people, women around men, etc.

📋 SURVEY FOR AUTISTIC PEOPLE

It is often said that autistic people have difficulty finding employment (I once read that 70-80% of autistic people are unemployed), but on the internet I mostly come across autistic people who do have jobs. So I would be interested to know how things are for you – whether you have a job or are unemployed. You can also describe your situation in the comments, e.g., why you have trouble finding a job.

The question in the survey is: Do you have a job?

Boost for better results. Thanks! 🙏🏻

Ok, I'm just gonna go ahead and ask.

How do people actually make new friends? Let's assume online for the sake of argument.

I've tried a number of approaches, I've tried both being spontaneous and winging it, and doing it a specific, thought-out way.

My attempts fall into a few typical patterns, but I'm not gonna describe them because that'd make for a LONG thread. I can't describe these things briefly.

(I might add some descriptions later,in a thread starting from this post)

But for now, let's assume: you see a person online, read what they write and after a while decide it'd be cool to potentially get to know them.

What do you do? Go.

Please be specific. "Just talk to them" could mean a million things.

You aren’t “behind”.

You lived decades without a map.

Every skill you built was survival.

Understanding that you’re autistic later in life isn’t proof of failure - it’s proof of endurance.

If there is any failure, it’s everyone who missed it.

ICYMI, Guppe groups are gone due to domain name problems (https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/115164282623836102) 😞

There is a new group provider FediGroups, here are groups in their public directory so far (! at start to avoid spamming them):

Okay, some really bad news but also a suggestion for a way forward. The Guppe groups domain name was sold by their registrar before they could renew it. This means all Guppe groups are broken, and their web addresses point to a spam blog 😞 However, there is another group provider called FediGroups, you can find out more on their site: ➡️ https://about.fedigroups.social/home FediGroups has features that Guppe never had, including private groups. If you, like me, are #autistic, then you might be immune to the effects of false or otherwise insidious advertising techniques

According to the article, #neurotypical people are more likely to get distracted by marketing techniques, while us autistics focus on the practical side of a product, rendering those techniques pointless.
