Jan 25 #WordWeavers—What’s the least likely ship between characters in your WIP?

Between the MC’s, Ævrie and Heiron.

Ævrie is laser focussed on supporting her community, activism and gaining equal rights for her fellow Elmar. No time for romance.

Heiron is an Arbiter—a mage detective, who works for The Magister, which is the government most responsible for the plight of the Elmar people, so not an ideal candidate. Plus he’s aro ace, so no attraction from his side either!

If you could spend a day with a popular author, whom would you choose? But more importantly, why would you choose them?

There are many possibilities, but I'd most enjoy a day with Neil Gaiman. All writers tell stories, but Neil appears to have that rarer, round-the-fire gift of being able to tell them well without first writing them down and revising them a half dozen times. Tips on writing and publishing are also great, but I really just want to hear the stories.

Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman.

I got to spend an evening listening to Neil at Ely cathedral for a reading & he was one of the most genuinely warm and gracious individuals I’ve ever met.

Alan is a fascinating cauldron of obscure ideas and wisdom. I saw him at a con once & I’d like to hear him talk more about his writing, the occult, & his snake deity.

#WritersCoffeeClub 25 Jan - How do you feel about writers who write outside of their gender/sexuality/race etc.?

Well, let’s look at the alternative. As a white, cishet man, all my characters would have to be white, cishet men—and surely that’s the problem already?

Writing outside of my experience allows me to connect with, and represent readers who aren’t like me. As long as it is done with love and sensitivity (with sensitivity readers,) it should be more inclusive. And that’s a good thing.

There’s a new (free to read,) article up on my substack that’s getting some traction. If you’re a writer or creative neurodivergent person, this one’s for you. (Just substitute ‘writing’ with your preferred creative pursuit.)

It’s ok if some days you just can’t do the thing, even if you love doing the thing.

I learned Russian in college, (for fun,) and 30 years ago got to visit. This brought back some memories.

I learned a little Russian in college, and got to go over there 30 years ago, so this brought back memories of learning to swear in Russian.

Weird Al continues to be the literal best.
Good morning!

I am looking for beta readers for a fantasy novel I have no idea what to do with.

I wrote it over 3 years. I love it but I've lost my ability to "see" it.

It's set in an age of exploration in a world still "discovering" itself, but is largely a commentary on colonialism and capitalism.

Lost meets Game of Thrones. Multi POV. Cool monsters. Weird religions. Octopus monks!

Anyway, lmk if that sounds like fun to you.

Hey Writers! We're now accepting submissions for the first issue of Fight The Future: an anti-fascist genre magazine.

Submissions can be of any genre. We're partial to science fiction, fantasy, adventure, mystery, and romance, but don't let that limit you. 500 - 5000 words, probably. Longer stuff will get serialized, maybe.

Poetry submissions accepted. We're still working on a poetry page rate.

Accepted submissions pay a rate of 10 cents per word.

We would prefer to publish the finished work under a cc-by-sa license, but I will consider alternatives.

Learn more and submit at the link.
