Hi World, so nice to be here!

I was The Clearing for many a tweet. Figured I'd take the opportunity to create a simpler handle :-) But just to explain, The Clearing is the title of a poem I wrote. One of these days I'll share that poem...had to help build some bike lanes first.

"The most effective way to deal with opposition from local businesses is to just get the bike lanes built. Before-and-after surveys tend to show that in the long run, everyone winds up satisfied."

Bike lanes are good for business, but store owners still hate them

Research proves that bike lanes are good for business. So why do so many stores and restaurants still oppose them?

#BikeNite starts at 4pm Pacific. We ask cycle-y questions for community discussion. I post questions w/ Q1, Q2, Q3; if you answer w/ A1, A2, A3, etc, it's easier to match.

Tag #BikeNite if you want your answer to be more discoverable; follow it to see questions & replies in your feed. Boost & reply to replies to keep the discussion going.

(You can follow BikeNiteQ tag so questions are easier to find, but you don't need to include this in your answers)

Yes, the #KeyBridge collapse in #Baltimore is a #transportation crisis, but it’s also an inflection point. What if, instead of reflexively stating the bridge needs to be rebuilt just like it was previously (or at all), we ask #MDOT and #USDOT to do an actual #study to determine if a more #sustainable and efficient form of #infrastructure, such as #rail #transit, might better serve the needs of #Maryland and the #EastCoast region. Chevron Will Pay Record Fines for Oil Spills in California

The penalties come after an investigation by The Desert Sun and ProPublica found that companies were profiting from illegal spills and California’s oversight of the industry was lax.

Lucky to find a #podcast on this:

"You know, so this is what I’ve been wanting to talk about for actually a few weeks now. You know, when you’re on foot, when you’re on a bike, jogging, in a wheelchair, whatever, when you’re out on the street and you are without the protection of a car, and you have one of these experiences with a driver, you know, in a big vehicle, when a driver almost kills you... Like, where do you put the rage?"

107. Is It Worth It To Confront Drivers?

The War on Cars

@forpeterssake yeah, if we could solve that problem, the whole thing would be solved! It's kind of like, cars + drivers are eating a giant steak sandwich, & they left a bite for you & me, now they want to take that away too.

Allowing signs to flash at driver speed is definitely a #carcentric choice, but at the same time, City Hall has fretted lots about drivers #speeding etc. So I'm hoping for a study, data, etc that I can present & ask them to think about what they're doing for all road users.

Anyone out there know of studies on the safety of people #walking & #biking along the #highway when there are #roadside flashing electronic #billboards present?

My city's looking to get rid of an ordinance that prevents sign content from changing faster than a minute (or thereabouts), to allow signs to flash & change at any speed.

This is the sort of thing I would've put out on twitter back in the day... Mastodon, watcha got for me?😃

@dancinyogi True. I'd add, think twice b4 leaving a mean online review, esp for a small biz. Is the goal to force them to close & have no in-person shopping? Criticism can be warranted, but nice online reviews can be left too, like tips in a tip jar. Reviews that say, i.e., "Staff didn't smile at me/be my best friend/dote on me" seem pretty petty😅

One thing that might be making people feel cranky is unrelaxed extra driving; I for one loathe it! Walking or biking to shop can be a mood changer!

@rjsheperd You may be on to something here... Alternately, maybe the lack of bike-specific #signeage & #CyclingWayfinding for us who #bike makes us better thinkers hehehe #MUTCD
@ShawneMartinez Nice to find you here! As you can see I haven't posted much here either ha. I've been offline a LOT more the past year. But I'm trying to get this account going a bit... I don't have IG or Threads, or Bluesky, so I think for me it'll be Mastodon or just a blog going forward. Hope all's going well!
