Early this morning RNZ Morning Report was discussing the big demand for EVs as petrol prices surge. They asked people to send their opinions so I did! I was really pleased they read mine out with a positive comment attached. People don’t always think about taking that further step away from cars altogether. I know it’s not possible for everyone but many people could do it.

Here’s what I said:

I once considered replacing my ICE car with an EV, but then decided to try going carfree and walk, cycle or bus everywhere. More than 5 years later I remain happily free of all the hassles of car ownership!

The ironic activist. Cost is the greatest economic incentive.

Just in a few hours ago, Israel’s main refinery site has been bombed by Iran and this location also seems to be a center for their naval power.

I have to hand it to these guys. They are literally just stopping oil in its tracks.

They’ve managed a completely unsettled disassembly of the global supply chain!

Oh, would you look at those poor poor people in France? Suffering living in caves because they have a car free neighborhood .

Oh the travesty. They have to walk. They have to walk. Oh dear, they don’t have to spend any money on gas to go out to their favorite café. How they must suffer their backwards, primitive life, eating berries, and living in caves.

May 2026 will be 4 yrs of owning and riding my Rad Power Bikes RadMission 1 Mid-Step #ebike year-round #CarFree in #Vermont.

It's been a good bike, but in hindsight, I think I would have been better off purchasing a CrMo touring #bicycle and fitting it with a Bafang BBS02 mid-drive.

With the troubles of the entire industry, I think that a lot of ebikes are going to become unrepairable in the next several years, but Bafang still seems to be in good health.

Out for a bike ride around Lake Merritt on a beautiful day in Oakland today, I *very* slowly approached a group of three elderly women walking toward me on the shared mixed-use path section, so they could safely pass while I waited for space.

(Yes, there are separated bike lanes, but they just abruptly end and route you back onto the shared path: https://www.oaklandca.gov/Government/Oakland-Improvement-Projects/Lakeshore-Avenue-Separated-Bike-Lanes-Project)

One of the women complained to me "why do we have all these bike lanes if you ride here anyway?"

So... I circled back and politely explained to her that the bike lane ended back behind us, and that I encourage her to vote for more bike lanes so I can stay out of her way.

Her friend was visibly amused, and another passerby stopped to affirm I was in the right, and literally fist-bumped me, so I'm delighted to have done my small part for cycling advocacy today

Without a *connected* network of *protected* bike lanes, most people simply won't ride bikes! You wouldn't drive a car without a connected network of streets either!

Always remember #CarDependency has us fighting each other over table scraps. It's a simple (and *solved*) geometry problem.
