Our new study, co-authored with @jedalong and Darja Reuschke published in Travel Behaviour and Society surprised us:

Passing through green/blue spaces during travel didn’t immediately boost happiness or reduce stress.

But walking, running, and cycling did improve momentary wellbeing, even without greener routes.

Does this mean greenery doesn’t matter?
Not at all. Long-term exposure still has strong wellbeing benefits.

UK-based study, so context matters.

🚨 New publication in Nature! 🚨
Science today is rigorous, precise, and trustworthy. That’s great. But when it comes to imagination, we hold back, hedging our ideas, avoiding bold statements because we’re always asked: “Where’s your evidence?”

I propose adding a Speculation Box to research articles.

Yes, there are risks. Speculation might be misunderstood.

But the rewards are greater: sparking discovery, and restoring the human voice to science.

Should science give itself more room to dream?

🚨 New publication in Nature! 🚨

I propose adding a “Speculation Box” to research papers: a short, clearly labeled section where scientists can share bold but non-evidence-based ideas, under a disclaimer that protects rigor while legitimizing imagination.

Should science give itself more room to dream?

It was nice at #ECTQG in Tallinn, Estonia. A smaller conference, but highly interesting network and a bunch of fascinating research. I presented my stuff on #Erasmus student mobility, @miladmzdh presented his work on regional connectivity, Olle Järv on #CrossBorder regions and integration in #Europe, and @tuuli delivered her keynote on the future of #Mobility and #Accessibility research.

So, all in all, very good representation from @digigeolab

AI will not decide the future of our cities on its own.

We will.

The question is:
Will planners lead the way, or be left behind?

The real challenge of AI in planning isn’t about learning to code or understanding neural networks.

It’s about changing our mindset:

❌ Fear → Curiosity

❌ Skepticism → Exploration

AI isn’t a replacement for human expertise, it’s a partner that can amplify our creativity and impact.

Urban planners should not be afraid of AI!

AI isn’t coming to replace planners — but it is transforming how we imagine, design, and govern our cities. 🏙️🤖

In my new article in Cities, I argue that planners don’t need to be coders or tech experts to start using AI meaningfully and ethically. The barrier isn’t technical — it’s cultural.

🚨 New paper out! 🚨

We tracked 587 workers.

🏡 Improving just residential walkability isn’t enough.
🏢 Commercial, leisure, and other daily destinations also shape how people travel, and how much carbon they emit.

🔍 We also identified distinct “emitter profiles” based on car access, job type & gender.

🧭 Urban climate policy needs to move beyond the 15-minute city ideal.
