I need to get in the habit of coming over here. Twitter is increasingly toxic. More and more MAGA firebrands in my feed- certainly good for derisive and engagement, not good for humanity. I hope mastodon servers stabilize.

and I have been hard at work for the past week putting together a Mastodon instance so that we can create a backup disability and chronic illness community.

For now, we have set up a terms of service, privacy policy, rules and best practices.
I have plans to set up a Twitter space to go through each of these with the disability community directly to add/subtract/reword things.
I just can't look away from the Elon train wreck.
I survived the Meta layoffs but lost many talented colleagues. If you have industry contacts, please offer referrals to folks posting over on LinkedIn. 11,000 people were laid off.

Also note that your content can not be searched (by design) unless you use a hashtag. On Twitter for a long time we used #swtech for social work tech content.

You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Often Mastodon’s features work the way they do because it was first populated by people who had been harassed on FB and the Birdsite.
For instance (not sorry), you cannot search Masto for a simple term. Only #hashtags. Say you’re having a private conversation about iguanas. Anti-iguana trolls will not be able to search for “iguanas”, find your conversation, and drop into it to say, “Iguana luvers suck!”
But if you are wanting to connect with new iguana fanciers on Mastodon, slipping an #iguanas hashtag somewhere into your posts will allow people to search for and find them.
