In comparison, maximising oil & gas extraction from the North Sea would save households a modest £16 - £82 per year - and only if the tax revenues collected were distributed to households to offset their energy bills, the authors say.

There was a brief period, before the pandemic, when people enthusiastically didn't fly and enthusiastically swapped tales of train trips and coach journeys and staying local. I remember people who did fly prefacing any mention of a plane with an apologetic remark. For a while, flying just for a holiday, frivolous flying, was as socially acceptable as smoking indoors. Now everyone is happily jetting off on their 5th city break of the year or flying 9 family members to Thailand for their birthday.
