The AR-15-style rifle used in yesterdays Louisville mass shooting will be auctioned off
Your reminder, the Kel-Tec 9mm handgun used to kill Trayvon Martin sold for $250,000.

Can it get even more pervers than that?
@flexghost ? like the police auction it? for non-americans, what does this mean?
is this like a 'famous' gun and people pay for it as a collectible? shouldn't it be used as evidence in the court case and destroyed?
@elias yes, the police auction it. they do this with all the property they steal from civilians.
Americans are gun freaks and any gun used in a mass shooting becomes a valuable collector's item, especially for conservatives. should it be used as evidence then destroyed, probably, but then the cops can't make extra money and the poor guys are really strapped for cash since their budget went up
@flexghost
@flexghost Some context:
"Greenberg explained that a law the state passed in 1998 prohibits law enforcement from destroying confiscated firearms — even when they have been used in crimes. Instead, those firearms — including the AR-15-style rifle used in Monday’s shooting at Old National Bank — are required to be sent to Kentucky State Police, which sells the weapons to federally licensed gun dealers."

@Smokinjoe @flexghost
Most police departments auction off confiscated items that aren't illegal in their own right. My dad bought my brother a drug scale to use for his model jet engine builds, for example.
This one seems especially egregious of course, I'm just explaining the system's logic here
@RnDanger @flexghost That makes sense - I learned that's possible on that episode when Homer ended up buying Snake's Lil' Bandit from a Police Auction.
I guess I had no idea that there needed to be such a quick turnaround with evidence. I get that after a certain period of time, you can't spend more due diligence on the weapon .. but it seems in awful taste to sell some item that part of an ongoing case.
@Smokinjoe @flexghost
They wait until the trial is over. They just don't want to store stuff forever, it needs to go somewhere and they make money this way.
I would prefer to see this gun destroyed but that's the policy right now.
@flexghost "Tragedy Capitalism" or "Tragedy Budgeting" are not acceptable public safety strategies.
Weapons used in tragedies should be retained through the lifetime of the accused, for trial and appeal purposes, then melted and scrapped. These weapons should never reach the street or a "collection" again.
Are you fucking kidding me? That should be fuckin' destroyed.
