If your instance is blocking an instance with folks you'd like to still read, you can add any Mastodon account to your feed reader (I like NetNewsWire myself) by using the following formula:

https://instance.name/@user.rss

#feditips #rss #mastodontips #feeds #fediverse #twittermigration #migration

I want to remind everybody -

Instances are all more-or-less independent in a federated space. Individual instances can decide how to deal with issues and objections they have with other instances. Debate is okay, but you should not be attacking or harassing other people or other instances for the decisions they chose to make regarding moderation, embracing certain policies or for-profit companies or cops or organizations, etc.

The nice part about the Fediverse is each instance gets to make it's own decision how to run itself (and deal with the eventual consequences of its decisions). This is for the safety and protection of all its members.

Please respect people's and instances' decisions to block or defederate from other instances.

This is going to be a challenging time for the Fediverse given the large influx of Twitter users, threats of Tumblr joining, organizations and companies flocking to advertise and monetize things, instance sizes causing moderation difficulties, etc.

The Fediverse will survive. And maybe some of the decisions people or instances make will have a positive impact.

🖤

The trans flag was hung right next to the city’s ceremonial sword. The image reminded me of the slogan, “Remember the dead, but fight like hell for the living.”

Migration question!

I know that if I start the migration process to move from weirder.earth to another instance, that my weirder.earth account will freeze and forward folks.

I also know that I can, in the future, come back and stop the forwarding process, and reinstate my weirder.earth account.

My question is, if I were to stop the forwarding process in the future, will followers who moved with me from w.e. to new.place suddenly stop following me at new.place and come back to following me at w.e?

As a blind individual, I have to say that #Caturday on #Mastodon is far far more enjoyable then at #Twitter, where the vast majority of cat photos are not described.

It is also been fascinating for me to hear descriptions written by those who sent the image, immediately followed by Apple image recognition’s attempts to describe the same image. Only rarely does that add anything to the ALT, & often directly contradicts it.

There is no auto magical solution to image description. It is something best done by a human, for only that human can explain the “why” of the image: the reason that image was chosen to speak so eloquently without words for those who can see it. ALT allows you to provide those words.

#Introduction I've been a front-end developer since 1999, when I was working in a nonprofit & was asked to write HTML & CSS from scratch; I fell in love with it. Now I co-own and co-run an intentionally-sized agency that exclusively serves nonprofits called https://DevCollaborative.com, we build sites in #Drupal & #WordPress & we care a lot about #a11y of content & code, as well as site longevity & sustainability. I live in the US New England, have too many pets, & am trying to learn acoustic guitar.

If you are in iOS, the Toot! app has the hands-down best visualization of conversation threading I've seen so far! Please, go be great artists in the vein of Pablo Picasso!

Quilting doesn’t usually stop me in my tracks, but our local #library has a show where multiple artists make panels and combine their work to hang together.

These are #quilts 😮

Learned a lot about fascism from the plague. One thing is related to how people seem more self-conscious about wearing a mask (something obviously, visibly helpful and caring) than not wearing a mask. That's a massive testament to the power of ableist, normative, and fascist emotional conditioning

It seems that oppressors are more shamelessly socially aggressive, and it's important to at least match the magnitude of that energy with the opposite values - yet, it's often the people who care about others who are more likely to feel cowed

The harmfulness of having an internal life that's so eclipsed by the fascist gaze that we feel shame/nervousness when we act in ethical ways also applies to spaces full of racism, transphobia, casteism, classism, and other oppressive ideologies. We gotta kill the racist, ableist, transphobic, casteist fascists in our heads - we can practice by saying shit that defies that internal gaze, then doing shit that defies it

I’m literally laying in bed in the pitch black dark and my first thought is, “Ooo I want to see it!”
