The Hunt for the German Hairy Snail

After attending my first Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland meeting at the Natural History Museum earlier this year, I stayed behind for a chat with Elliot Newton from Citizen Zoo where the German Hairy Snail project was first proposed. From its inception, the project included further partner organisations, Zoological Society of London, Greenspace Information for Greater London…

Cody Dock

Devastated that some eco vandal has uprooted and removed hundreds of native tree & hedgerow species from a wildlife corridor where I have been working with community volunteers for the past couple of months.

Working in ecology in an urban setting can be very rewarding, but there are significant challenges.

Today I feel tired, angry and upset.

Hoping for some better days ahead 🌱

A 12 mm fish produces 140-decibel sound to communicate in turbid waters

An international research team, along with Senckenberg scientist Dr. Ralf Britz, has studied Danionella cerebrum, a small species of fish with a length of no more than 12 millimeters. Despite its diminutive size, the fish can produce sounds close to its body of over 140 decibels—comparable to a jet engine during take-off in 100 meter distance.

We anthropomorphize animals. Especially the famous ones. We can't seem to help it. 🧪

But when does it help? And when does it HURT? Thoughtful piece by Alice Sun who I got to meet at @sciencewriters.bsky.social https://scienceline.org/2023/09/what-happens-when-wild-animals-become-social-media-sensations/

Wildlife celebrities can harm or help conservation. It depends on how we engage with these critters’ stories online
