"The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom." | Isaac Asimov

Some accounts on here are marked as "Automated" or "Bot". This is not a bad sign! These are generally good and useful bots 🙂

These labels are added by the bot's owner to let people know there isn't a human responding to replies. More info at:

You can find lots of useful weather bots at https://fedimeteo.com

Some bots are interactive, for example @votechess lets people play a collaborative game of chess. @dungeons is another popular interactive bot.

The best description I've ever heard of AI is the following. I heard this in the 80s, and it has held up since:

AI is magic.

1: You see a magic trick. You are amazed by the magic.

2: You are shown how the trick works. You are impressed by the technique.

3: You learn how to perform the trick. Now it's not magic, it's sleight-of-hand, or mirrors, or misdirection.

This is why "AI" is always bullshit: once you understand it, it's not AI any more, it's something else.

Seriously I don’t want to be a good person so I can live with God after I die. I want to be a good person so I can live with myself while I am alive.

Everyone is asking "What's the next Twitter going to be" and bemoaning the fact that the userbase is splintering. But splintering is a GOOD thing. The internet would be a lot healthier, more diverse, in instead of 3 or 4 dominant platforms, we had dozens or even hundreds of upstarts. Yes, centralization is convenient, but as we're seeing, it's also dangerous. If the result of the Twitter turmoil is to drive people to a more diverse, less convenient, less centralized web, I say AWESOME.

Hi new people from #Twitter and other wonderfully dystopic social media environments.

Did you know that since there is no #algorithm here we don't have the benefit of sucking down whatever #birdsite wants to send you? That means, that unless you BOOST someones post - no one will see it unless they follow them.

Like something someone said? Give it like.
Want someone someone said to be seen by others? Give them a boost.

I'm unsure if #MondayQuickTips is a thing - but with enough followers, boosts and support we can make it a thing. That is the power of #Mastodon. We #Mastodonians are wholly responsible for the feed we curate. Boost responsibly. :)
