Fleur de Sel Salted Caramels: Because life's too short not to

Oh, the joy of salt! We grind up rocks and sprinkle them over food daily — and we love it. Megan Jane de Paulo's Fleur de Sel Salted Caramels are the perfect excuse to add a little more.

This is a good time to buy all the T Kingfisher books you do not already have. (Insurance just means you don't have the FULL cost, not that the copays are affordable) #SFF #Bookstodon https://twitter.com/UrsulaV/status/1669789721776513024

“So…uh…the biopsy news wasn’t great. The big painful lump is malignant. I go in next week to meet with the surgeon and we find out stuff like “what stage” and “lumpectomy vs mastectomy” and stuff. It’s weird, but as much as I was panicked, I don’t think I really expected it.”

I could re-watch that time and time again. It's absolutely fascinating, to watch the whole process of making the #yarn and #knitting those shawls. And I just love the accent.

This is "only" sixty years ago - nearly in my lifetime. Some things look so familiar from my youth. And some seem to be in a much more distant past.

Great article in The Discourse about a new cookbook by local author, Jules Sherred. https://thediscourse.ca/cowichan-valley/jules-sherred-crip-up-the-kitchen

Duncan-based author reclaims the kitchen for disabled cooks

'The kitchen is the most ableist room in the house,' says Jules Sherred. 'That’s why I want to "crip up the kitchen.”'

It's Friday, it's a gorgeous day here in the valley, and the jasmine has started blooming. Think I'll knock off early and sit on the balcony with some ridiculously cold white wine and a good book.

To remove some of the bitterness from kale:
- rip the leaves off the main stem
- cut up the leaves
- roll over them with a rolling pin, or crush with clean hands
- rinse
The brutal treatment creates isothiocyanates some of which are removed through washing. It also breaks down some of the tough fibres - leaving you with milder tasting tender kale.

We're organizing for our open submission call in September. Here is a glimpse of our priorities:
- Canadian/perm resident authors and Global South authors
- short book projects 17k-60k are our sweet spot but we're open to anything up to 100k.

I’m looking forward to announcing two forthcoming new short stories that very much represent where my interests are these days.

Soon. Stay turned. 😊
