A year and a half ago, Emmanuel Defossez and Pierre-Marie Allard started brainstorming a seemingly crazy idea: to profile the metabolic content of all species on our planet. What began as a light-hearted joke during breaks has evolved into the concrete and ambitious Earth Metabolome Initiative (EMI).

My university has a spectacular botanical garden on campus; whenever I make time to take a lunch walk through, which is not often, I ask myself "why don't I come here more often?" Such an excellent zen moment.
