As I was beginning my walk in the local botanical gardens, the wild turkey who has become a fixture of the gardens for a while now was peeking in the windows of the main building.

Some of the trees you discover in the Africa and Madagascar sections of the Koko Crater Botanical Garden on Oahu.

There is a 2-mile circular path through the gardens. It is an easy walking path, with some small inclines.

It was fascinating to see so many unusual species of plants throughout the gardens. It sometimes felt like I was walking on another world.

Koko Crater Botanical Garden rests in a volcanic crater. The garden was set aside for development in 1958.

It preserves rare, endangered dryland plants from around the world. That includes species from the Americas and Africa (with a section specifically for the plants of Madagascar).
