ChatGPT gets treated like technological magic, but that ignores the humans behind the curtain that make it function.

OpenAI paid Sama to hire Kenyan workers at $1.32 to $2 an hour to review “child sexual abuse, bestiality, murder, suicide, torture, self harm, and incest” content. Their work made the tool less toxic, but left them mentally scarred. The company ended the contract when they found out TIME was digging into their practices.

A fantastic way to make an important point. Researchers took items from widely-used scales of "social media addiction," and reworded them to be about spending time offline with friends. Using parallel criteria, they discovered that 69% of people are addicted to spending time with friends.

"Readers should approach our measure with a level of skepticism that should be afforded to current social media addiction measures."

It looks like adding a rel="me" link from ORCID profiles is getting attention from the ORCID dev team: https://github.com/ORCID/ORCID-Source/issues/6668#issuecomment-1369615284 . This would allow academics here on Mastodon to get a green checkmark on their profiles beside their ORCID link, giving a trustworthy way of showing who owns a given Mastodon account.
