There’s only another 15 minutes left in the Beinecke open house but I think that’s just enough time for me to crack it. #RBMS25
ANALYSIS | U.S. could lose democracy status, says global watchdog | CBC News

Possibly defying a court order. Urging his Justice Department to prosecute nemeses. Repeatedly calling the media 'illegal.' Declaring a predecessor's pardon null and void. U.S. President Donald Trump has done these things in the past few days.

I've been trying to get olmocr working on my MacBook, since the OCR results from the online demo are great. Jonathan Soma's post https://jonathansoma.com/words/olmocr-on-macos-with-lm-studio.html was recommended by Simon Willison but I couldn't make it work. This code from kmarxican does the trick: https://github.com/allenai/olmocr/issues/33#issuecomment-2726291140 (except that the sample pdf it tries to fetch from https://molmo.allenai.org/paper.pdf isn't there - use your own test pdf) (note that it will download 10GB of models the first time you run it)

I love documents and olmocr helps me bring them to The People

How to end an email in which you propose a wildly ambitious new scheme to your team:

"The plan is not ripe for action, but is ready for the next step in definition and formulation. Shall that step be taken?

Or shall we take upon ourselves the responsibility for dropping the whole thing at this stage?"

- Robert C. Binkley , 4 Nov. 1933, proposing a CCC-like scheme to get unemployed students to catalog historical mss, which led ultimately to WPA newspaper-indexing and union catalog projects

I've drifted away from IIIF lately (damn you GenAI), and I was sorry to miss the opportunity to attend the 2025 conference in Leeds (where I went to the first couple of medieval studies conferences in the '90s), but I'm glad to see the sessions are up on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYPP1-8uH9c4tPJPPK7BL3WvHAqEpY-uj

Y’all. Mastodon has a new Terms of Service that’s problematic. I’m hoping and cautiously optimistic that they’ll sort it out. But for now it’s not good.

@mcc wrote one of the best GitHub issues I’ve ever seen. It explains everything in great detail. Check it out if you want a full picture on the situation.

Summary Since it first opened, mastodon.social has operated without any sort of explicit IP grant from the users to the service, which is unusual for a social networking service. Today Mastodon ann...
