@henryfarrell @adapalmer And further, while humans *are* inherently biased, bias and irrationality are exacerbated and mitigated by both training and situational factors. We can design systems and education to mitigate, and test whether they're working. But good democratic systems should both assume universal educability and test for how we're handling the reality of universal vulnerability to error.
As a growing number of instances block journa.host, I'd encourage people to steer clear of the narrative that Mastodon's culture is somehow anti-journalism. If you're looking for a natural experiment, take newsie.social β€” I could be wrong, but as far as I know there's been no widespread blocking of that instance, which also predominantly hosts reporters. This is about the moderation decisions made by a particular instance, not some broader antipathy for journalism.

A little introduction! Please retoot to reach our old followers!

Bandilang Itimβ€”meaning β€œblack flag” in Tagalogβ€”is a distro for anarchists and abolitionists in the so-called Philippines. As a distro, we promote anarchist+abolitionist perspectives on Philippine issues.

We also developed some theories, one of which is β€œOur Struggles Interlinked” where we argue a strategy where sites of struggles need to be interlinked together, since sites of struggles are already interconnected through intersectional and interlocal oppressions anyway. Our struggles are stronger when we connect workers to students and sex workers or workers in the Philippines to workers in other countries.

As a distro you can reach to our content via <bandilangitim.xyz> where we prepare translations and original writing.

If people screenshot trump here it’s an immediate block/mute.

Alaska, Washington senators team up to seek disaster declaration for closed crab harvests

"A collapse of those stocks prompted state and federal officials last month to fully close the 2022-23 season harvests of Bering Sea snow crab and Bristol Bay red king crab."

Alaska, Washington senators team up to seek disaster declaration for closed crab harvests

Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska and Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington sent the request to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

@CyberneticForests Yes, and for this reason I already unfollow boosts from people who boost constantly and (to me) indiscriminately.

(Trying out the Masto-style quote post whereby I respond and then boost my own response, hi there!)

So this is happening

It's that time of year:

@ScoterD

Next time someone complains about singular "they" I'll point them to this 17th century rant against singular "you"
Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it becomes more popular than the birdsite.
