@henryfarrell @adapalmer And further, while humans *are* inherently biased, bias and irrationality are exacerbated and mitigated by both training and situational factors. We can design systems and education to mitigate, and test whether they're working. But good democratic systems should both assume universal educability and test for how we're handling the reality of universal vulnerability to error.
As a growing number of instances block journa.host, I'd encourage people to steer clear of the narrative that Mastodon's culture is somehow anti-journalism. If you're looking for a natural experiment, take newsie.social β€” I could be wrong, but as far as I know there's been no widespread blocking of that instance, which also predominantly hosts reporters. This is about the moderation decisions made by a particular instance, not some broader antipathy for journalism.

A little introduction! Please retoot to reach our old followers!

Bandilang Itimβ€”meaning β€œblack flag” in Tagalogβ€”is a distro for anarchists and abolitionists in the so-called Philippines. As a distro, we promote anarchist+abolitionist perspectives on Philippine issues.

We also developed some theories, one of which is β€œOur Struggles Interlinked” where we argue a strategy where sites of struggles need to be interlinked together, since sites of struggles are already interconnected through intersectional and interlocal oppressions anyway. Our struggles are stronger when we connect workers to students and sex workers or workers in the Philippines to workers in other countries.

As a distro you can reach to our content via <bandilangitim.xyz> where we prepare translations and original writing.

@mojomoomoo @davidrevoy Yeah. Me, too (i reliably score right on the midpoint of the extro/intro scale)
@jasonp @wusel Wellll ... I may actually be wrong about that. I saw that weider.earth seems to be currently set to actually defederate from the two big instances in a week, and I follow people there. I do know that ours upgraded their mod teams very recently, so who knows if the conversations between the teams may prevent that. We'll see which level of cutting of ties will happen. In any event, I can reconnect when I found a better home. This is a busy and unstable time for the Mastodon.
@johnquiggin @crookedfootball BTW I get a few dozen accounts with "France" in the name. ONE (1) post. And a few dozen good hashtag suggestions.
@johnquiggin @crookedfootball Well, it's made to be less exhaustive for text-based search, as opposed to hashtags or groups. And also, not to have a uniform experience for ppl on different servers. But! Right now every major server is under huge load and has large backlogs. I'm sure queries go into the ether right now because fresh data isn't there. Give it a mo' until you form an opinion, okay?
If people screenshot trump here it’s an immediate block/mute.

@eschaton @Aphrodite @maegrenofwithy @info So they chose to punish rudeness over transphobia? No ethical backbone then? Well, they shouldn't be surprised about getting defederated.

I understand that the there's stuff that is a-ok by journalism ethics but not fediverse ethics, but if they want to be part of this community they need to hold themselves to the higher set of standards.

@jasonp @wusel I don't think mastodon.social is going to be a pariah (well, don't hold me to it if I'm wrong). Eugen is more libertarian than I like, and I DO want a more outspoken anti-racist, queer, justice-forward instance (one that "gets it"), and I also think the ideal size of a big instance is in the 5 figures of users. But I'm in no big hurry.
