Peril Strait (Shee Káx’ in Tlingit) runs between Chichagof & Baranof Islands. Name is a direct translation of the Russian placename, which originated from a 1799 tragedy when around 150 Unangan (possibly Koniag Alutiiq) hunters pressed into service by Russians died from eating poisonous shellfish. The adjoining Poison Cove and Deadman Reach also refer to the 1799 incident. #alaskahistory #alaska

The stormy and mild weather the first half of January reduced sea ice extent in the Bering Sea by 19 percent in NSIDC data. As of January 20 ice extent is the 7th lowest in the past 46 years. The good news is that the weather pattern has changed and ice is starting to regrow and move south, and that looks to continue through this week.
