The huge carpenter bees in the garden (genus Xylocopa) continue to fascinate me, & this is one of my favourite pictures to date 🙂👍
It shows the subtle dichotomy of the gorgeous wing colouring – a bright metallic violet-blue in reflection & a deep crimson in transmission ❤️
The light dusting of yellow pollen offsets the otherwise dark head & body nicely 🙇♂️

My bee balm went kaput last yr so I planted this native scarlet bee balm (likely Monarda didyma) last fall. Plant was so robust I was able to take clippings early on & start more plants in my 2nd garden. Hopefully I won't go without again🤞.
I use rooting hormone to get them started. Been experimenting w/ using it with directly planted cuttings of goldenrod, butterfly weed, and purple poppy mallow with some success this year. Beats buying plants or waiting for seed 🤷♂️. My 2nd garden is new this year so I have lots of spaces still to fill.
Mine succumbed to powdery mildew (I think). Tried treating it but the plant didn't make it. Have had that or similar issues with my purple coneflowers and asters.
