Very happy to announce my submission to the University of Guelph research photo contest "liquid gold" was a winner in the faculty/staff category AND community choice!

A conservation red list, not of species but of *taxonomists*. Too little funding and too few positions mean we are ill-prepared to measure the biodiversity we are losing.

The Tree bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum) is a relative newcomer to the UK but is now a common sight in gardens, parks and woodland.

They first came over from mainland Europe in 2001 and have settled in as one of our own. Luckily, they don't compete with our native bumblebees for nesting space as they are our only species that like to nest up high in bird boxes, roof spaces, and you guessed it, trees! 🌲

It's a bumble bum! Jewelweed hides its sweet nectar deep within the flower so bumble bee workers need to crawl in quite far to reach it, allowing for adorable photos like this!

Anyway, this is all to say you can’t argue #urban wetlands are not valuable. #UrbanWetlands are not wastelands. In fact, increasingly I’m convinced they are some of our MOST #valuable natural heritage features. It is essential we protect them. Fight #Bill23. Fight #development in the #greenbelt. Fight #WetlandCompensationPolicy. Defend and restore #wetlands in urban areas. (Infographic by Megan Jordan from #SaveOntarioWetlands
