Many scholars are leaving Twitter for #Mastodon, a public, decentralized alternative, impervious to private take-over:

Scholarly organizations are already supporting this migration:

There are analogous solutions for another public good in private hands: journals. There are even levers the scholarly community could pull to incentivize an analogous migration:

What are we waiting for?

I've been speaking and writing lately about how tech companies try to shift the discussion on misinformation, polarization, harassment, etc., away from the systems and structures that are inherently toxic and toward questions of individual behavior.

This way they can blame their own users for any pathology and steer clear of calls for systemic change.

Today Elon Musk has come through with a perfect illustration for my future talks.

#Harvard is hiring a University Scholarly Communication Officer and Director of Open Scholarship and Research Data Services.

I was the director of the Office for Scholarly Communication. When I stepped down (semi-retired) last year, Harvard restructured the office and this job ad shows the results. Basically it's the ad for my successor. It's a plum job and I recommend it to anyone who wants to work at the cutting edge of #openaccess, #opendata, and #scholcomm.
