I built this tool a year ago but I feel like Mastodon folks would like it

The "Weird Old Book Finder"

Type in a search query, and it'll find one randomly-chosen public-domain book that matches the query -- and present it for immediate reading: https://www.weirdoldbookfinder.net/

Why only one book? To prevent the paradox of choice! Just *start readin'*

Can't promise every book will be weird, but most are

A longer essay on how/why I developed it: https://debugger.medium.com/a-search-engine-that-finds-you-weird-old-books-3a74fbb5f3d4

This was a search for "mastodon"

You have to be a very specific type of person to name your surveillance company Palantir.

Either you don't understand the sinister symmetry of that or you're proud of the fact that you're a horrible person.

I know which one I think it is.

What do folx do in the way of sensory planning? And if you don't do anything right now, how might you want to start?

I probably just used to bimble around the world completely oblivious to noises, smells and crowds of people overwhelming me.

Since #burnout and since lockdown, I really, really notice unwanted or unexpected sensory stimuli, especially if I am tired.

I find now that I have to do sensory planning. I have to think about where I am going and what I might encounter - and adjust my day/journey or take supports along so that I can do the things I want and not miss out.

I tend to always take rechargeable noise cancelling headphones and Flare ear plugs with me - and a battery pack so that my phone and headphones can always have juice.

I'll usually have a fidget cube...I prefer heavy, metal fidgets to play with.

I wish there was something I could do about smells. Anyone have any ideas there? I was thinking about dabbing menthol under my nose for the gym but...it all felt a bit Clarice Starling 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Anyway, on a serious note, thinking about my sensory needs and always having sensory supports in my backpack really helps.

Does/would something like this be helpful to you?

I feel like I'm living in a simulation run by a malevolent AI who's seriously POed at me for reasons I can't comprehend ie Roko's Basilisk may already exist and we're just now figuring that out.

@therobburgessshow I was, too, in church as a deacon end November. I took it off to eat something in between church tasks. An asymptomatic was present and the beast caught me. I am vaccinated 5x, but 14 weeks post-covid, I still can't live a normal life, cause everything I do needs to be thought through since I get easily exhausted. I don't know where this will end. Mask up and live your own life.
The author of the latest NYT piece about how conservatives are being silenced is simply billed as a senior from Princeton. Not disclosed:
President of the College Republicans, active in conservative causes since his early teens, publisher of a conservative newsletter, head of the conservative debate society, writer for Campus Reform, a Koch-funded entity that attacks faculty.
@kairyssdal aw this brings back great memories of my Dad ranting about them. Hell hath no fury like a systems engineer delayed by obviously avoidable inefficiencies.

I laughed out loud and a colleague asked me what I had found amusing, and it was, "There is strong disagreement that skulls explode as a result of extreme heat."

Also, TIL: Brains are weirdly more likely to survive than other tissues in the body (sometimes turning into dark resinous glassy goo, but not actual GLASS glass).
