Okay, after sleeping on it I realized the instance uniforms in Godot are, like, per-draw instead of per-material. Which _is_ a useful thing to have, it’s just not what I needed.

I can use RenderingServer to reduce the node traversal overhead of thousands of draws, but it still won’t be cheap.
