wait you mean to tell me ancient Japanese scholars were essentially writing in netspeak?

I'm reading this book and I gotta say the section on Old Japanese is diving deep into pronunciation terminology that is a bit beyond my level of knowledge.

I'm doing my best to follow. Though honestly I'm more interested in getting to the section on Middle Japanese grammar anyway.

After a bit more reading I think I'm giving up on this book.

The target audience seems to be someone with a high level understanding of linguistics and the terminology thereof, along with limited or no knowledge of the Japanese language.

That is not me. Almost all of the text examples are rōmaji or non-ipa linguistics symbols along with no explanation of what the modern equivalent word would be. I'm simply not following at all.

Doing some searching around it seems like this might be closer to what I'm looking for. There doesn't seem to be an ebook version that I can find aside from some poor quality scans. Amazon has the paperback edition for a reasonable price, so maybe I'll grab it.
