I know nothing of Snow and climate change. But its complexity is fascinating.
And how should our societies live within biophysical planetary boundaries?

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @Su_G @petergleick

Word!
Remember after #HungaTonga in January 2022? When some cli-sci said, the effect of the water vapour in the stratosphere on global climate would be negligible?
Negligible my ass.
England and Northern Germany drowned in winter 2023 and again 2024. And again in January 2025. Including winter crops. Due to HungaTonga.
Negligible my ass.
Central and Northern Europe has its driest spring ever this year since records began. Happy sowing season in dust! Happy pollination without water for insects! Due to HungaTonga.

Jucker et al 2024 shows this as "significant" European deviation from the 2005-2021 average.

Oh, but global average temperature only gained a temporary 0.03°C from HungaTonga, so what...
These types of cli-sci really don't get WHY they're doing what they do.

And the fact that these types of cli-sci who have net zero instinct for impacts on society, are so prominent in the public makes it even worse.

In-depth reporting on how disposing of old satellites by burning them up in the atmosphere is becoming a serious problem
https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2025-space-orbit-satellites-pollution/
Cool article design, many links to papers. And the second part is on how the industry responds to this very real threat.
One such reaction is:
" “I don’t think this data, this analysis is concrete, robust, or has been done enough to be definitive yet,” said Chris Jones, vice president of network operations at Iridium, a satellite communication services provider."

Yeah, right...
the article also states that the industry keeps it a secret what in detail and how much of it they put in their spacecrafts, ie into the atmosphere.

And then one industry speaker has the audacity to declare loftily, the analyses on harm weren't enough...

Another quagmire... like the fossil mire . And the majority of it occurring in the USA whose regulation authorities ideologically weren't up to the task even before Trumler and his gang of criminals were elected by US citizens... a shithole country if ever there was one.

@sellathechemist

Dang. The Student Union even?! Young people are the moral thermometer in societies.

I wonder what went on behind the scenes, the internal debate, or whether pressure came from UCL or Uni Lancaster administration, the Lancaster administration almost sounds like they do.

Dunno. I'd equal the suspension to a hypothetical decision to exclude ScientistRebels because they broke the new UK laws.

There is the law. And then there's ethics. Young people, university students all the more, should not obey wrong laws but demand law to change according to ethical values.
Of course it is humanitarian aid to help #Ukraine defend herself to end the rape by Putler.

From the FT: UCL Student Union suspends the Ukrainian Society for buying a drone and sending it to a Ukrainian soldier - action is in breach of the UK's laws governing charities. The decision makes me feel uncomfortable. I get it, yes, but no I don't.

@rahmstorf Yup. It's been axed. It's prepared on a complete shoestring by a great producer - Alex Mansfield - and Roland.
Roland used to be a producer in the Science Unit and he invited me to present a HistSci programme. And then he changed my life when he suggested that I turn a chemistry demonstration lecture into a radio programme. I never imagined it could be done but Roland steered it flawlessly. It remains one of my favourite things I've ever done. Remarkable man.
Korrektur: diese Aussage aus dem Tagesspiegel stimmt so nicht! Der Artikel bringt einiges durcheinander, was in der Pressemitteilung des DWD steht. Sorry, ich hätte das erst nachprüfen müssen. You want to know what #climate scientists got wrong about #climatechange?
We were too cautious. It's happening faster than we anticipated and the impacts are going to be worse.

I know this one. The Constitution of the United States.

@gleick If they'd set out to intentionally humiliate themselves, these people couldn't have done any better than they're doing every single day. F*¢king #fascists.

#Amerika #resist #DoNotComply

@gleick Yale Law must be so proud.

@gleick

Every rock that exists is smarter than this guy.

@adavid @gleick He says stuff like this although he is smart. That makes him so fucking dangerous. Don't underestimate fascists for no reason.
@wackJackle @adavid @gleick Exactly. He is intentionally acting to manipulate and deceive. That’s far, far worse.
@trisweb @wackJackle @adavid @gleick yeah, this is all to familiar if you've dealt with christofascists, he's intentionally setting up for the "only god can judge me" shit. It's terrifying.
@adavid @gleick he sounds like he just crawled out from one of them

@adavid @gleick

Hitler's second in command - Rudolf Hess - was a pretty "smart" one too 😎

@gleick Lol. Flashback to Thomas Jefferson, 1803. The elitist white supremacists apparently never change.
@gleick
You forgot to phrase it in the form of a question, sooooo
BUZZZZ!
#Jeopardy
@gleick
Phone a friend? Oh, he has none.
@blabberlicious @gleick
Yes, he has. Those clapping guys at the airplane on greenland. You can't see them, they are off screen. But he said he was waving at them and they were clapping on that silent snippet. True friends.
@Easydor @gleick
Just like penguins, not found on Greenland.

@Easydor @gleick

I think he slapped the tariff on the Penguins because they didn’t turn up to greet him.

@blabberlicious @gleick
But they wear suits.
I can't see consistency here.
@gleick Makeup Artist: Baby, you've got to tone it down...
Vance: Who gave these justices a right to judge me??
MA: No, sweetcheeks, I'm talking about your eyeliner, you can save that other noise for the show.
Vance: Too much? You really think so?
MA: You primetime now, baby, time to grow up and ditch the Rocky Raccoon look.
@Wyatt_H_Knott @gleick his eyes now have that sultry smokey look. He’s better at applying that than I am. That takes practice. He once wrote that he 'convinced myself that I was gay' when he was a kid. My money is he’s just not come out yet and too terrified to do so. Feel sad for him if that is the case.

@Lassielmr @Wyatt_H_Knott @gleick There is absolutely nothing that could make me feel sad about his ilk.

Maybe before he participated in causing suffering to hundreds of thousands or more people.

Now? I fucking hope he suffers every waking moment of every day until his early death.

@Lassielmr

J D Vance.

I do not feel sorry for him, no matter what.

This man is so full of hate it is eating him up from the inside and hurting others on the outside.

The man is dangerous

@gleick Isn't the clue in the name -"judge" And the justification in the title "justice"? Have USA citizens forgotten what the actual words mean?

@gleick

How did he even graduate from Yale with a law degree with that level of ignorance?

@thesteelrat @gleick
Well, #Bush junior got one. Those are the things #money can buy. That s what #infuriates #Trump: he is so #stupid, that even his #daddy Could not buy him a #degree.
@gleick Long as we're asking questions -- where did this VP get the idea he's above the law?
@obot50549535 @gleick I’d assume from the president that has proven he is.

@obot50549535 @gleick

Curtis Yarvin, Peter Thiel, etc.

@gleick
Boooo
And yes the constitution and presidents appointment of these justices including the 47th … what a shocker
@gleick
he looks like such a stupid baby
@gleick The Constitution. That old chestnut.
@gleick
I know he is trying to impersonate the Complain Smurf, his Idol.
Created the Idiot Smurf instead.
@gleick If JD Vance doesn't know the nation's Constitution not creating absolute monarchs above the law, he doesn't belong where he's undeservedly now!
And if he doesn't know that, he plainly perjured when he ignorantly swore the oath of allegiance & office, to support & defend the Constitution he evidently hasn't read & understood.

@gleick

co-equal branches of government

@gleick It's in the name... 'Judge'
@gleick is this real? this can't be real, right? i know vance isn't exactly the brightest bulb on the tree but i find it difficult to believe even he would say something this asinine

@gleick

We the people gave them that power. Literally.

@gleick who gave him the right to think he is above the law and why would he need to be?
@gleick now that he's tasted human flesh, he wants more
@gleick Something he knows nothing about.
@gleick And the People.

@gleick. Again talking like he didn't go to Harvard Law.

People are not judged
UNTIL they are tried for crimes.

Just wait, buster.

[of course we all decide who is merely distasteful & wrong & unfit for office]

@gleick @djl

I think government officials ought to be required to *read* the Constitution before taking an oath to uphold it.

@gleick

He knows he’s full of it, but he says it anyways. What a cynical , calculating, fascist person.

@astroPug @gleick

Yes-- he already knows the answer but he's hoping we don't, or don't care as long as they keep hurting the "right" people more than they hurt everyone else.

@gleick Vance is like Trump and the rest of his administration. They all lack common sense. The Supreme Court and the Federal judiciary is the third branch of our government. They decide on Constitutional issues. Trumps authority is given to him by our Costitution, and guess who decides if Trump exceeds his Constitutional authority, our federal courts. So, yes Mr. Vance. They have the authority to judge you. They also have the authority to hold you, Trump and Co. in contempt of Court.
@gleick Becoming a state means buying into that debt-ridden, deficit-driven system. It means Canadians’ tax dollars might go to servicing interest on U.S. military contracts, not funding local infrastructure or healthcare https://open.substack.com/pub/chiefphd/p/why-canada-should-never-become-americas

@gleick
Does it not strike you as odd that an educated lawyer would not know this?
@gleick Oh yeah yeah like the fifth amendment, sixth amendment, and seventh amendment

@gleick

"We the people of the United States..."

It's _us_ Mr Yale graduate. We decided, and continue to decide to maintain that.

@gleick
Hmm. What part of “the rule of law” does this clown not understand?
@gleick @benroyce Maybe it's Vance wants to start the conservative anti-anti-establishment band. Poor man appears.confuded by reality.
@gleick Never have I facepalmed so hard, it's almost like asking "who gave water the right to be wet?"

@gleick

It’s unbelievable… pure evil is among us.

@gleick .. One thing in particular was misunderstood .. to serve the people, not that the people must serve.
