I went to college for software development. I'm a fan of science, music, video games, libre software, and urban planning.

I picked this instance because it runs the Glitch fork of Mastodon, it blocks Threads, its stated subject matter focus lines up fairly well with my interests, and it gets an A+ on https://cryptcheck.fr.

A few days after the fact, I've finally found something I want to say about the killing of Charlie Kirk: I'm concerned that someone was apparently willing to carry out a political assassination in general, but I'm thrilled that the world no longer suffers from Charlie's presence. Both can be true at the same time.

Charlie was a professional extremism launderer; specifically, his job was to maintain the public perception of an open and vigorous debate of topics that should not be debated. Like the personhood, and worthiness of rights, of categories of people. Regardless of his killer's specific motivations, the bigotry that Charlie made a career out of spreading is the most effective driver of political violence ever invented.

If there's one thing I wish I could get every earnest liberal to understand, it's that, from the point of view of an authoritarian psychology, efforts to persuade, to "reach out" & "find common ground," are *viewed as evidence of weakness*.

Tonight, the Israeli military carried out a drone strike targeting a civilian vessel hundreds of miles away, solely on account of the passengers' intention to symbolically challenge the blockade that Israel is using to starve Gazans to death.

Although the Tunisian National Guard initially denied that a drone strike occurred, the Global Sumud Flotilla posted both video footage and eyewitness testimony that appears to confirm that the boat was, indeed, struck by a drone. It seems most likely that, once again, the denial of the Tunisian National Guard simply indicates the complicity of international institutions in the perpetration of genocide in Gaza.

The Israeli military has attacked every single flotilla protesting the blockade around Gaza since 2010.

The violence of the Israeli state is systematic, indiscriminate, continuous, and targets anyone who could interfere with their program of ethnic cleansing. Backed by Christian Zionists, they perpetrate this violence right up to the limit of what they can get away with. In addition to the tens of thousands they have murdered and the millions they have displaced, rendered homeless, tortured, terrorized, and imprisoned, this also makes life more dangerous for Jewish people everywhere.

There is no excuse for Zionism.

Strongly agree with a good 3/4 of this by @pluralistic:

The best outcome would have been for Chrome and Android to have been spun out into non-profits, endowed with the cash Google has been paying Apple to avoid any more competition across apps/search/web.

It has not helped matters that neither DOJ, nor most civil society orgs (save @owa), could see through private-equity-adjacent logic to understand the public interest in these software projects. Own goals all around.

Huge news in Ontario today! This will benefit people who cycle, but it will also benefit people who drive cars — though some of them might not know it yet.

"Justice Paul Schabas concluded Wednesday that the bike lane removals will not reduce congestion. In his written decision, Schabas highlighted expert evidence ‘which establishes that bicycle lanes, and in particular separated or protected bicycle lanes, reduce motor vehicle traffic congestion by providing an alternative method of transportation that is safer for all users of the roads.’”

Ontario court strikes down Ford government's plan to remove Toronto bike lanes | CBC News

An Ontario court has deemed the province's plan to remove three major Toronto bike lanes unconstitutional. In response, the premier told CBC News: "I believe, and the people of Ontario believe, that they elect parties to make decisions — they don't elect judges."

The Air Canada strike situation is an unmitigated disgrace.

First of all, getting no pay for mandatory work while the plane is on the ground is fucking insane, and it apparently being industry standard practice (which I had no idea of before today) makes it so much worse. Unions explicitly agreeing to it in the past doesn't make that any less true; I dearly hope those unions had damn good reasons at the time, because any union worth its salt would know that this is textbook wage theft, and sends the message that this type of labour is not valuable. A message that is, of course, a lie, because if it wasn't valuable it wouldn't be mandatory!

The other prong of this hellscape is that forcing people back to work should never be allowed, in any industry, in any context. Causing economic damage is precisely the purpose of strikes; that's what motivates the company to give the workers what they want. If the company is so big and central to the economy that a strike will significantly damage the entire economy, then that's not a reason to force people back to work; it's a reason to break up the company!

I was unfortunate enough to find myself in a church this morning. I saw this and immediately imagined some moron seeing it and going, "Le gasp! D.E.I. has infected the churches now! 🙀"
