20+ years ago, as an impressionable high school student, I got to visit the telescope at Apache Point, New Mexico, that conducts the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Today, astronomers at Johns Hopkins released a cosmic map based on 20 years of SDSS data and it is STUNNING. 200k galaxies, each one represented by a single dot on the map!

Did you know that Ireland had one of the first battery powered trains? The Drumm Nickel-Zinc battery train ran from Dublin to Bray (1931 - 1949), it recharged at stations as passengers got on/off using "excess" electricity from the newly built Ardnascrusha hydropower station. Iโ€™ve been using this as an intro to my Teacher CPD workshops this year and most never knew this #IrishHistory #ScienceWeek #edchatie https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p9jFA3fKG6c&ab_channel=BritishPath%C3%A9

In medieval England, some courts decided guilt or innocence through an ordeal called "Trial by Cake" https://daily.jstor.org/trial-by-combat-trial-by-cake/
Trial by Combat? Trial by Cake! - JSTOR Daily

The medieval tradition of deciding legal cases by appointing champions to fight to the death endured through 1817, unlike its tastier cousin.

Earlier today Chemical Science Executive Editor May Copsey explained the ๐Ÿ’Ž Diamond #OpenAccess model to delegates at the #ChemSciSymposium - authors pay no APCs or publication charges and the journal is free to read.

Since 2015 almost 10,000 articles have been published this way, completely free to both readers and authors.

As the flagship journal of the Royal Society of #Chemistry, a society publisher, this is only possible through the support of the chemistry community & other RSC journals.

By way of #introduction:

#cheminclusion is a service for the #chemistry community helping to inform everyone about #diversity, #equity and #inclusion initiatives in chemistry.

We are also to be found at twitter.com/cheminclusion

Please feel free to tag us at #cheminclusion if you know of any DEI events or news in chemistry!

Please help us spread the word and encourage more and more chemists to get involved! In that way we can increase more awareness about DEI too.๐Ÿ‘
