You may have heard that Houston schools plan to convert libraries to disciplinary centers and fire the librarians.
What you may not have heard is that the State of Texas took over the Houston school district and installed its own superintendent.
That's the guy who is closing libraries. This is not something local residents want, and the superintendent is not locally accountable,
So... in the US we now have an "anti-library" party. It's remarkable how many ways republicans keep coming for libraries and librarians. From the stuff in Houston where they are turning libraries into "discipline centers" and firing librarians. To the books bans and empty shelves in Florida.
Libraries are powerful and important, and if this doesn't make that clear? I don't know what will.
Hey, an instance for black queer folk that needs a bit of exposure to get the word out about it. Please boost if you have friends who've felt alienated by the nazis you tend to find on other, unmentionable servers. https://blackqueer.life

This is a news story from 2023. This year. White residents won't let the duly elected Black Mayor take office.
Good. The whole concept of cash bail is that people should be detained pre-trial based on how much money they have, instead of whether they're a flight risk or a risk to the community. It's an indefensible system. It should be abolished everywhere.
"The Illinois Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a state law eliminating cash bail. Illinois will now become the first state in the nation to eliminate cash bail when the new law takes effect Sept. 18."

Hi mastodon! With the collapse of twitter I've lost much of my reach for finding clients 😔
I'm a disabled artist & commissions are my primary source of income, and I just contacted the last people on my queue today—which means after I finish their commissions I won't have any further income
If you could share this post or pass my name along to anyone looking to commission people at the moment I'd appreciate it! Thank you ❤️
**CALLING ALL FRIENDS, ADVOCATES, AND ACTIVISTS** A leaked e-mail from a Texas Department of Protective Safety trooper documents the remarkably cruel measures Governor Greg Abbott has instituted at the border to deter crossings. These include hidden razor wire traps, the withholding of water even in extreme heat, and orders to push migrants—including children and infants—back into the Rio Grande where they might drown. The sight of razor wire to corral innocent human beings has echoes for me personally, when similar wire surrounded the Japanese American internment camps of my youth. We cannot let Governor Greg Abbott get away with this. I'm calling on you, my friends, advocates and activists, to help put a stop to this by signing the petition demanding the Biden Administration puts an end to these inhumane practices against migrants in Texas.

I keep seeing journalists / analysts missing this insight. It's framed as "Everyone is leaving Mastodon!" Or "Threads is already dying!" Neither is necessarily true.
This is a natural phenomena that always happens with rapidly growing apps and networks.
A better way to think of it is "Of every 1000 users who sign up, only 1000/N of them will be here in a year, so discount the growth rate."
It's scary to know what N is. And it changes over time. And it can change rapidly.
