Good. The whole concept of cash bail is that people should be detained pre-trial based on how much money they have, instead of whether they're a flight risk or a risk to the community. It's an indefensible system. It should be abolished everywhere.

"The Illinois Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a state law eliminating cash bail. Illinois will now become the first state in the nation to eliminate cash bail when the new law takes effect Sept. 18."

@maxkennerly Totally agree. Cash-bail like in US is a method that here in Europe we cannot even understand.
@opensoul @maxkennerly Cash bail is used in at least Germany and France. The way and circumstances when the US sets bail are really bad, but it's not a uniquely American thing.
@maxkennerly First in the nation? I thought New York eliminated cash bail a few years ago - is there something different between the two I'm missing?

@maxkennerly

*IF* "cash bail" was meant to be an independent means to ensure appearance, *then* it would have been *proportional* to income and/or assets.

The fact that it is mostly of a fixed size deliberately chosen to be an impediment to the disadvantaged but not the advantaged shows its true intent.

@maxkennerly #massachusetts let's get our shit together. Being beat by Illinois is embarrassing!
@maxkennerly Trump is a Rapist and the GOP/Nazi party is fine with that. I want to be clear the party of the religious right supports a known rapist.
@maxkennerly I can't tell you how many people's lives have been ruined due to the spectre of cash bail. Deplorable.
@maxkennerly I agree. However, copaganda is in full speed. Especially outside of Chicago area. Some congressional districts are going to be tough going for Dems, crazy amounts of misinformation.
@maxkennerly If it had been applied uniformly in harmony with the purported logic of its purpose, the rule would have been that failure to appear results in forfeiture of everything you own and financial ostracism. If.

@maxkennerly
A lot of people (let's call them "Republicans") think abolishing #CashBail means abolishing ALL bail and simply letting people go after they're arrested (notice they never think it means "*deny* bail".)

The people working to end Cash Bail need to do a better of job of explaining what exactly that means.

@maxkennerly I believe we recently had a Prop here in California to address this issue, but, obviously, it failed. I voted for it. Cash bail is an undue burden.

@maxkennerly Last Week Tonight had some episodes on that matter iirc. Here is the newest I could find:

@maxkennerly will the stupid states( Florida, Texas, Alabama … Idaho, you know who you are), follow suit?
