#TrumpVirus Gazette

Here’s my take-away, thin-sliced from watching Fani Willis, hearing various reactions, ending w/perspective from Neal Katyal...

For RICO charges (#GA) you need to be connected to at least two different ‘racketeering acts’. There were 161 here. Defendants are like spokes of a wheel, interconnected. There's incentive, if you're a lower-level actor who did only one thing, to flip on the one who made you do it.

Donald #Trump was named 193 times; all roads lead to him.

@chipotle on micro.blog writes about vanity, Mastodon and Threads style.

https://micro.coyotetracks.org/2023/07/10/youre-so-vain.html

This longish article is worth reading if you're interested in the Threads business model (see Facebook), where Mastodon fits (it doesn't), so why bother with Mastodon (regulatory deniability), the philosophy that generated Mastodon (respect), and what the danger of Threads is to Mastodon (fragmentation).

#threads, #mastodon

Coyote Cartography - You're So Vain, You Probably Think This App Is About You: On Meta and Mastodon

Published a couple of days ago, this ZDnet article claims that the Threads team was unable to create a suitable framework for ActivityPub. If true, I wouldn't spend too much effort figuring out how Threads might affect the fediverse, or vice versa.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/5-things-to-know-about-metas-threads-app-before-you-entangle-your-instagram-account/

"Mosseri* said in a post that future versions of Threads will integrate with ActivityPub, a decentralized social networking protocol that also supports Mastodon. However, he said that the team responsible for building Threads could not create the framework to support ActivityPub."

"Historically, ... [Meta's] apps rely heavily on walled gardens to maximize the profit made from marketing and advertising campaigns targeted at users. "

5 things to know about Meta's Threads app before you entangle your Instagram account

Facebook's parent company released its Instagram companion app, Threads, as a direct competitor to Twitter.

someone once asked me why i was so worried about the environment

i just said "i live there"

and they looked at me as if that fact had never once occurred to them

I don't know how many times I can scream it but for anyone new here from the latest #twittermigration #twitterexodus here is the best advice for having an awesome time on this site:

Find a #hashtag you like that may be part of your interests (e.g. - #mst3k, #ukraine, #breakingnews) and click it. Then look for the little dude in the top right of the feed and SMASH HIM

Suddenly any post with the hashtag will be in your main feed regardless of who you follow. And around here #HASHTAGS ARE USEFUL! No reason to spam when there's no ad revenue or #algorithm!

And this place has another awesome feature: TIMED MUTES/BLOCKS
If you don't want to see someone's stuff for an hour or so, just choose to keep them quiet for a bit.

Say they're annoying you with #protips about #mastodon but you know their #ADHD will force them to move onto #Mosstodon by lunch... MUTE THEM UNTIL LUNCH

Just set it and forget it and then they'll show up again!

Again, the three tips for achieving #JohnMastodon's grand vision:

1) Boost
2) Follow
3) Post with #hashtags

Enjoy!

You have to switch to twitter to watch. https://twitter.com/Eric_Erins/status/1596917329010446336

When you've watched and think, "Huh?", then think about the role cathedrals played 500 years ago, and the awe they produced. They are still awe inspiring today.

Then think about the awe in the video. Was there any?

@emptywheel followers. It is much easier to read text based images with image cropping disabled. If you are seeing cropped images that make the text impossible to read, you can turn off cropping in Preferences.
I have to say, I am still boost shy here at #Mastodon - Simply because of negative experiences from the other "place". I always feel like I may annoy or over-boost - But then I remember, this is how it works here. This is how we support others and find those who interest us. Strange, shifting to a more enjoyable social media platform.
I find myself commenting on random people’s toots more often than I would on the ‘other’ platform. Is that ok? Seems people are more open to chat here…
