@mjb

Thank you for this. You've got me thinking that you can frame an argument either positively for change, or negatively against status quo, depending on who you are trying to convince.

#TrumpVirus Gazette

Here’s my take-away, thin-sliced from watching Fani Willis, hearing various reactions, ending w/perspective from Neal Katyal...

For RICO charges (#GA) you need to be connected to at least two different ‘racketeering acts’. There were 161 here. Defendants are like spokes of a wheel, interconnected. There's incentive, if you're a lower-level actor who did only one thing, to flip on the one who made you do it.

Donald #Trump was named 193 times; all roads lead to him.

Thanks.

Just FYI though, there's an error in the link. I hope this is the correct one.

Trump's Means of Bullying and His Co-Conspirator Volunteer Lawyers - emptywheel

Imagine the challenge of writing a protective order that would prevent Boris Epshteyn from getting access to Trump's discovery.

Yes. Hosting a server in the #Fediverse is apparently a simple enough thing to do. I wonder if more organisations will eventually start doing this, just as they host their own email servers.

Hmm.

If you perceive philosophy as a foundation on which ideas can be built, then you must start with the "giants", and then add your own idea. But philosophy is not like that. It's more like a soup with new ingredients occasionally being added. The soup slowly evolves, but the original ingredients remain.

Perhaps there's a compromise. If your aim is to taste the soup rather than add to it, then relationships among the ingredients is what you write about. If you want to add to the soup, you need to find new ideas and let someone else stir the soup.

@chipotle on micro.blog writes about vanity, Mastodon and Threads style.

https://micro.coyotetracks.org/2023/07/10/youre-so-vain.html

This longish article is worth reading if you're interested in the Threads business model (see Facebook), where Mastodon fits (it doesn't), so why bother with Mastodon (regulatory deniability), the philosophy that generated Mastodon (respect), and what the danger of Threads is to Mastodon (fragmentation).

I read somewhere that a former Head of State set up Truth Social. He posts on it a lot.

@MarkIngs Beautiful. Stunning even. But it's also why I'm glad we're 150 million kms away from that thing. (Thanks for posting.)
@openwebfriend
Exactly. But it might be a good idea to consider how Linux was seen 20 years ago and where it is today. (Who tried and why did they fail?) The hope is that the IT investment needed to support a Mastodon server is minimal, because it will compete with no investment needed to simply adopt a for-profit platform.
#Threads, #Twitter, #Mastodon

Published a couple of days ago, this ZDnet article claims that the Threads team was unable to create a suitable framework for ActivityPub. If true, I wouldn't spend too much effort figuring out how Threads might affect the fediverse, or vice versa.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/5-things-to-know-about-metas-threads-app-before-you-entangle-your-instagram-account/

"Mosseri* said in a post that future versions of Threads will integrate with ActivityPub, a decentralized social networking protocol that also supports Mastodon. However, he said that the team responsible for building Threads could not create the framework to support ActivityPub."

"Historically, ... [Meta's] apps rely heavily on walled gardens to maximize the profit made from marketing and advertising campaigns targeted at users. "
