More squash vine borer damage! First hint is this droopy leaf. Look on the underside and down the stem for small holes and/or lumps of frass. Sometimes you can extract the Squash Vine Borer and save the leaf, but this one is too far gone. Often the moth lays an egg right at the base of the leaf like this one did and you have to scrape it off before it digs into the vine and kills the leaf.

Fasciation in a female zucchini. The third picture is a normal female flower. The first 2 show abnormal cell proliferation. I have no idea if the bees got in there to pollinate it, or if it can even be pollinated. Parasitized hornworm caterpillar - braconid wasps lay eggs under the caterpillar’s skin then grow in these cocoons until the cut themselves free. As much as I don’t want the hornworms eating my tomato plants, they do do a good deed by hosting these pollinating wasps. Wish I’d taken a better “before” picture so you could see the small light brown hole near the end of the zucchini leaf. Cut open you can see the small squash vine borer inside - white larva with a black head. This is a small one. Spot the SVB Egg! This egg was laid in a devastating plant-destroying location. Had this one survived, it would have bored into the main stem at the base. The larva would have chewed itself a nice home. I’ve caught many after the destruction has begun and cut them out, but you have to get them early, especially in such a sensitive location. #gardening #vegetablegardening #zucchini #svb #pest #egg
