It's been a week now since I've seen a #SquashVineBorer adult or found any new eggs.

I've dug a few larvae out of my volunteer pumpkins but surprisingly they seem to be surviving ok otherwise.

My moschatas continue to be unaffected.

Next year for squash, I'm going to be focusing on #SquashVineBorer resistant varieties.

This year, my trombonchino (aka zucchetta) plants haven't attracted a single egg, and have been producing massively. The only downside is these squash absolute need some kind of trellis, and they do need a fair bit of pruning.

I've seen a lot of info online about #SquashVineBorer being active only in June, or till mid-July or something like that.

I've been recording adult & egg sightings this year (Zone 6b, Southern Ontario). My first sighting was June 6th, and I've been seeing them ever since. Killed one laying eggs on my cucumbers this morning.

Once I stop seeing them regularly I'll drop another post.

Troboncino squash are putting out fruit now, which is fantastic. I have high hopes for these guys not getting devastated by Squash Vine Borer like every other squash I've planted every single year. Also I'm hoping my volunteer pumpkins & zucchinis which somehow survived being hot composted (?!?) will serve as trap plants. I've killed 2 SVBs already and destroyed a bunch of eggs on the volunteers, but there's no way I got them all.

First #SquashVineBorer sighting and kill of the season. Found lots of eggs on my trap pumpkins. Nothing in anything else. #gardening

More squash vine borer damage! First hint is this droopy leaf. Look on the underside and down the stem for small holes and/or lumps of frass. Sometimes you can extract the Squash Vine Borer and save the leaf, but this one is too far gone. Often the moth lays an egg right at the base of the leaf like this one did and you have to scrape it off before it digs into the vine and kills the leaf.

Wish I’d taken a better “before” picture so you could see the small light brown hole near the end of the zucchini leaf. Cut open you can see the small squash vine borer inside - white larva with a black head. This is a small one. Luckily no damage other than this leaf. #vegetablegardening #gardening #growyourown #veggies #zucchini #squashbugs #svb #pests #squashvineborer
Staking zucchinis makes it easier to spot squash vine borer eggs and damage, and also helps combat powdery mildew. I also wrap the stems in tinfoil to further protect against the dastardly squash bugs. Just harvested two nice zucchinis off this first plant, and making some amazing fritters for dinner! #gardening #vegetablegardening #zucchini #squashvineborer #fritters #pestcontrol #gardeningmastodon

Last year I got next to nothing from my 3 delicata & 3 kabocha plants - besides a massive amount of greens for the compost pile. Why? Squash vine borer. Injecting the vines w/ Bt did not work as they infested solid parts of the stem base.
