"As a passionate sociologist, she created the child tax credit and championed legislation to increase the guaranteed income supplement," reads the statement.

"Her greatest achievement was the unanimous adoption of the Canada Health Act by the Parliament of Canada in 1984."

Dr. Gladys West grew up in 1930s VA. She had limited opportunities as a black girl in the south, but went on to become a mathematician.

In the 1950s, West helped program the Naval Ordnance Research Calculator. Later, she worked on modeling the shape of the Earth & helped develop satellite geodesy models, a foundation of GPS.

Every 2 weeks, I set up a stool in the kitchen to give my son a haircut. Today before I really got started, he had his eyes closed and was smiling softly to himself. As I combed out his curls, I ask why he is smiling. He said it's because he just likes it when I do his hair. 😍

"Can you put a design in my hair, mommy?"
