Gossip has it when Francis Crick and James Watson were collaborating, Crick was doing the hard thinking while Watson was playing with lego, and so the double helix came to be.
Anyway, I hope history will remember James Watson as the phenomenal bigot, racist, misogynist - you name it - he really was.

I wonder if Dr. Strangelove was actually a nazi, I mean it may seem as if he was doing a nazi salute, but the gesture is clearly clumsy. He even tries to fight it, so it wasn't on purpose, on the contrary it was against his will. We can't know what his intentions were. Maybe the arm was a nazi, and it set him up. Yes, that's what it was.

The problem of Godwin's very real law is that when an actual nazi does some nazi thing it makes it easy to normalize it and dismiss criticism as frivolous. It's not normal! We shouldn't say this lightly but when it's in front of our eyes we should denounce it and fight it: a nazi salute is a nazi salute.

I've been to Verdun once, what impressed and humbled me was the extent of the site. It's one thing to read about it on wikipedia, it's another to be there and imagine a battle going on for almost an year claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands. #WWI #WW1

I can't help but sharing a little anecdote. This morning I gave a lecture on non-coding RNAs to undergraduate students, where I presented "the short story of a short RNA" - the discovery of the first micro-RNA - lin-4 in C. elegans. Right after finishing the lecture I learned this work was awarded the #Nobel prize. It's such a pleasant coincidence, specially because it's such a beautiful work.
