I've finished: Pretenders to the Throne of God by Adrian Tchaikovsky

A dramatic new installment in the The Tyrant Philosophers universe.

Tchaikovsky is great at conveying the personal cost of authoritarianism and war. The wounds it opens in body and soul, the sacrifices it demands and the price they exact.

I'm probably not objective on this, but the European attitude towards the Iran War as "this is Trump's problem" is starting to annoy me. Prices are already rising. Prolonging this war and/or a rolling escalation will create a huge global crisis.
Also, if Iran WINS, it's not going to be good for anyone. A strong Iran, who doesnt have to fear US retaliations, is a danger to the Gulf states and to Europe.
Europe needs to figure out what's the best outcome, and start working on it.

The gist is: Israeli fundamentalists' problem is that they hang on to 1938, and ignore that Israel is the power in the region.

They are the danger now, and not the victim. The main cause of friction isn't that they're a weak nation, far from it, the occupation is, 100%, the cause of all Israel's friction.

To not acknowledge this simple fact will always endanger Israel, and, in turn, Jewish people the world over

In case you missed it, new particle just dropped. The LHC has confirmed (and in ridiculous accuracy) the existence of a heavier version of the proton.
A proton is made of 3 quarks, up/up/down. This new particle is made of charm/charm/down, where the charm quark is basically the same as the up, just heavier.
So not groundbreaking like finding supersymmetric particles, but still cool. Further confirmation that the standard model of particle physics is reasonable.

LHCb Collaboration discovers new proton-like particle

The LHCb experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has discovered a new particle consisting of two charm quarks and one down quark, a similar structure to the familiar proton, but with two heavy charm quarks replacing the two up quarks of the proton, thus quadrupling its mass. The discovery, presented at the ongoing Moriond conference, will help physicists better understand how the strong force binds protons, neutrons and other composite particles together. Quarks are fundamental building blocks of matter and come in six flavours: up, down, charm, strange, top and bottom. They usually combine in groups of twos and threes to form mesons and baryons, respectively. Unlike the stable proton, however, most of these mesons and baryons, which are collectively known as hadrons, are unstable and short-lived, making them a challenge to observe. Producing them requires smashing together high-energy particles in a machine such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These unstable hadrons will quickly decay, but the more stable particles that are produced as a result of this decay can be detected and the properties of the original particle can therefore be deduced. Researchers have used this approach many times to find new hadrons, and the new particle just announced by the LHCb Collaboration brings the total number of hadrons discovered by LHC experiments up to 80. “This is the first new particle identified after the upgrades to the LHCb detector that were completed in 2023, and only the second time a baryon with two heavy quarks has been observed, the first having being observed by LHCb almost 10 years ago,” says LHCb Spokesperson Vincenzo Vagnoni. “The result will help theorists test models of quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force that binds quarks into not only conventional baryons and mesons but also more exotic hadrons such as tetraquarks and pentaquarks.” In 2017, LHCb reported the discovery of a very similar particle, which consists of two charm quarks and one up quark. This up quark is the only difference between this particle and the new one, which has a down quark in its place. Despite the similarity, the new particle has a predicted lifetime that is up to six times shorter than its counterpart, due to complex quantum effects. This makes it even more challenging to observe. By analysing data from proton–proton collisions recorded by the LHCb detector during the third run of the LHC, the LHCb Collaboration observed the new baryon with a statistical significance of 7 sigma, well above the threshold of 5 sigma required to claim a discovery. “This major result is a fantastic example of how LHCb’s unique capabilities play a vital role in the success of the LHC,” says Mark Thomson, CERN Director-General. “It highlights how experimental upgrades at CERN directly lead to new discoveries, setting the stage for the transformative science we expect from the High-Luminosity LHC. Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.

My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

I spent the last couple of weeks finally finishing a project I started for Bletchley Park about 20 years ago. Recreating the original MUD and MIST on a mirror of the original Essex University system that finally closed in 1991.

Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle wrote the first online multi-user game (MUD) on Essex University's DECSystem-10 in 1978 and it ran till I closed it in 1991. I diligently backed everything up so I could potentially recover it one day, but as far as I can see, all the DECSystem-10's went to the great scrapyard in the sky, my backups were mostly stolen when my first museum was stolen, and I had huge issues recovering the Essex BCPL compiler to compile what I had left when I finally got a decent TOPS-10 emulator running on a VAX for Bletchley Park.

One good thing about being an unemployable whistleblower is free time, so I finally hunkered down to some 90 hour weeks and built a software replica of the Essex system I think reflects it well. It's running on a KS10 not a KL10 but I had to let some things slip.

I put the latest known versions of MUD and MIST on it, and miraculously found ROCK too.

In those days, you were generally faced with a "." prompt and left mostly alone, so for authenticity, I will leave it at that.

I should note that although they were, in their day, wildly popular games with a relatively huge community, this is a museum peice in snapshot-form at the moment. But I will leave them up and running to see what happens and as a useful reference. I wasn't going to, but Richard seemed happy to have MUD running, and former MIST players wanted it back, so...

Historically, the telnet connection is much more true to the traditional experience, where you were connecting to a working machine that didn't care about the MUD Guests, so there were no pointers at all. Just rumour and hearsay :)

If any of you Unix/Security people notice I messed up something, please tell me. I left "^], !sh" open on the telnet link for about 2 minutes and nearly had a heart-attack once I spotted it :D
